Best firewall with HIP's protection to protect my system. I don't really care about speed or resource usage I want to know what the top 3 are interms of out of the box protection for windows 7 64-bit combined with spybot, mbam pro, and avira premium

Outpost Firewall Pro works great -- and highly rated, too.

In my order, Comodo Firewall, Online Armor Premium, Online Armor free, Outpost FW Pro,

Comodo must be tweaked a bit for maximal protection.

For me,Privatefirewall has been the best standalone firewall i have ever used.Fortunately there are quite a few really good firewalls out there.Pretty much comes out to a matter of personal taste i suppose and what exactly you are looking for from your firewall. Some don't play well with prexisting security software and or older hardware.I have never used OA firewall, but have heard lots of great stuff about it

If you decide to use Outpost Firewall Pro.If Avira premium is being used then my advice would be to unistall avira premium (if already installed) and then reboot, then custom install outpost firewall pro, during installation select expert mode and then install just the firewall module, you don't need outpost's web protection or spyware protection if avira premium is being used. Then restart the PC and then install avira premium.Outpost firewall pro is excellent.

Comodo firewall is excellent and so is private Firewall and so is Online armor. All Good choices by the way IMHO. Try them all and see which you like.

I do not overload the firewall for all tasks, if a malware disables remain without any protection, so I'd use one to monitor the application level, without HIDS.
I would use a single HIDS, and a firewall to monitor the other levels of the ISO / OSI model stateful inspection.

    Hi Mike,

I have tried almost every firewall out there (both free and commercial) and Comodo is still the one I like the most. Its Defence+ component works well, and I have disabled the sandbox because I use Sandboxie - which offers much more control.

For me Comodo free Firewall, Avast free AV, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free, Sandboxie, and KeyScrambler Personal is a great combination of free software for all-around protection. Add to that some decent light-virtualization protection (like Returnil RVS Lite or Toolwiz Time Freeze), and you should be fully covered without having to pay anything! Of course there are other decent free security programs out there, these are just my personal favorites.

I think the best one for yourself, is the one you are willing to learn all about and how to properly set it up and use. Will you be able to correctly answer a popup asking you to allow or deny? Most average users will be clueless and click allow, therefore it is similar to playing Russian Roulette, because sooner or later they will choose incorrectly. Being an average user myself, I learned that my router by itself is my computers best friend.

That's why people should learn about their systems. Everyone can learn for as long as their brains are intact, I have even taught some 80 year olds how to use PCs and be safe online.

A lot of people just don't want to learn. They use their computer just like another electrical appliance, comfortable to do certain tasks and that is it. I have despaired on how many users I have seen using their PCs without AV, or with expired pre-installed AV and ignoring the program's warnings. Their systems were at times sporting wonderful collections of malware, and the fools just kept on using them. When bad things happen such users freeze like a hare caught in a car's headlights, and cry: "but I didn't know!". Nope, they didn't WANT to know. If they wanted to find things out they could have done so, all the info is out there ready to be received. I have neiher patience, nor sympathy for such people.

As I said on another thread, the antelopes that cannot outrun the predators will always end up as dinner...

I know what you mean, I have to work with people that refuse to learn. No matter how many times I try to tell them, they never listen. I am a computer technician, and if they ever run into a problem...They automatically blame me. I always get the "Well you were the last one to fix my computer" saying. Basically telling me it's my fault that their computer got infected or if other problems occurred. Even after they put the blame on me, I always wonder if they truly think that way, then why on earth do they keep paying me for my services. HaHaHa, Some people I'll never understand.

Everyone is capable of learning, why not put the good ol' brain to some use.

Yep just fixed my wife friends toshiba laptop with over 90 days expired Norton Internet security.
It was so badly infected that it shut down with seconds of boot up.I restored a factory image then spent a little over 5 hours of updating it and then installed avast, and EMET changed windows wall to block all inbound. She called me after getting it home and resetting her internet thanking me over and over for a fast smooth running system.amazing how well a system can run when its not invested with junk.

I haven't tried Online Armor in quite a while, I was pleasantly surprised.

Can it be true that OA isn't full of bugs finally? :D

I may have to recommend OA.

Will OA replace ZA as best fw?

I'm going to be test driving OA.

I really want to like and recommend Online Armor, but for me it has one feature that makes it completely unusable for me. The fact that it stops all network connectivity until you answer a firewall alert.

Basically kills any remote desktop connection when an internet connection alert happened, which in my scenario is very common for me to use to go from my mac to my Windows 7 laptop.

Granted, the firewall alerts get fewer and fewer as time goes on, but it happens every time I install new software for instance, or software updates, etc. Ugh. I asked Emsisoft about it and it's the way the software is designed and it didn't sound like it'd be changed any time soon.

I have online Armor premium running with shadow Defender on another system and OA is running great but banking mode seems to have a bug as it dont work on my system.

However,I do not use banking mode but it would be nice to have it working.I would still recommend
as it runs very well and light on a netbook.

The alerts is normal and thats from the Hips when any changes occur to your system.I dont use the firewall but use all other shields and use windows firewall to block all inbound.
