Windows Media Player Removal!

I've installed VLC. I do not need Windows Media Player 11 now. How do I remove Windows Media Player?

From Windows Components Wizard? From Add or Remove Programs? Or from my Geek Uninstaller(forced uninstaller or normal uninstall)?

I think it's 'glued' to Windows.

Brute force method would be to use a neat little program called Unlocker and delete everything related to WMP, after uninstalling it through add and remove/components wizard that is.

 

LoL. But it would be sitting there doing nothing.

 

i think both Media Player and IE are glued to windows

you can break them and it will look like you uninstalled them but some DLL and other files will be there

just don't use it and if you hate it so much BLock it by hips

 

that's the whole idea. lol

it doesn't take much disk space so I would not worry about it.

 

Back in the Windows 98 days, I used to make a point of installing Windows without it. These days, it's no big deal to me.

Windows 7 lets you 'remove access' to WMP:

• Start Menu > Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults

 

one thing than can be done though is to disable Windows Media Sharing.

it's a Scheduled Task.
I used Autoruns to permanently disable that feature.

it won't remove WMP but it's a process that doesn't need to be running if your are not using WMP

 

I've read that Perfect Uninstaller will work.
I've never used an uninstaller so can't say-

Part of the problem seems to be, when you want to update Windows, it sees that WMP needs to
be updated or fixed so that can cause problems.

Or you can just change it from being the default player- and leave it alone.

You did not mention your windows version?

In Windows 7, you can remove windows media player in "Control panel>Programs>Programs and features>Turn windows features on or off>Media features"

It seems no one wants to give you a straight answer
without telling you to just leave it or ignore it, but I know
how you feel, you may be like me and do not wish to have
trash in your system

Spruce was right, the program "unlocker" will help you do this
Just go to add and remove components and remove WMP
then go to programs folder and using "unlocker" delete the folder
for WMP, windows will not like this ignore it, get a good "reg cleaner"
like Vit Registry Fix and do a cleaning, reboot the system
you will have a empty WMP folder

you can also get rid of the folder etc. but that is more than I will
go into here, this will probability give you what you want

MAKE A IMAGE OF YOUR SYSTEM FIRST
just to be safe

 

From Windows 7 Control panel click on programs, now click on turn features on or off, in media features untick media player ,and reboot when it says so

 

I'm sorry I forgot to mention the system in question is Win XP SP3

 

When normally uninstalling with my Geek Uninstaller it says WMP will be returned back to the version the computer originally came with. So I backed off.

Thank you all but I think agree with moontan and will let WMP as it is.
