I have a fairly new latop with a 5400 rpm internal hard drive.
I want to order an external hard drive back up system. Can I buy and use
a 7200 rpm my book(example) or amI stuck with 5400?
Also, which of the backup systems is easiest to use?

This is for Windows 7 64bit.
    Thanks.

I would go for 7200. Built in backup is straight forward as it can be

    Hugger,

You can use either type of external drive but imho it's more important to select an external drive with a fast interface! Your new laptop probably has USB 3.0 ports and maybe an eSATA/Firewire port. Either will provide much faster transfers than USB 2.0, so be sure that the external drive you buy is not an older USB 2.0 model (I would opt for USB 3.0, as that is now the 'universal' standard).

    Cudni, Scott.
Thanks for the much needed advice.
Of the many brands out there, such as WD's My Book, what would you
guys recommend as easiest to use and durable.
    Thank you.

Are you looking for a portable or desktop model?

And what disk-capacity do you want?

the backup does not need to be portable. and capacity would be 500
    g's or higher
    Thanks.

This one provides good capacity, performance, value and warranty for the price.
