To appguard or not to appguard

I'm mainly using just sandboxie as my sole protection on my second machine and was reading good things about appguard.

Do you think sandboxie+appguard would be sufficient protection ?

I'm also not sure about appguard mainly because it looks difficult to setup ?

I see that appguard is about $35. Would that be for a lifetime license.


Any info/tip on how to set it up and make it work with sandboxie et all appreciated.

 

I have tested AppGuard (30 day free trial) and it rocked. What they say about it is true, it truly is awesome to have. You can't go wrong in using AppGuard with Sandboxie. As for licensing goes, I do believe it is a lifetime license.

But, for my tastes...I prefer to use NoVirusThanks EXE Radar Pro as an Anti-Executable, it's a $19.99 lifetime (1 PC Multi-User) License, and comes with a ton of features. I have a license, but am waiting for the 64-bit version to come out (to put on my laptop and desktop machine). I am using it on a 32-bit netbook though, and I absolutely love it. On an end note: There is also a limited feature "freeware" version that you can use as well.

Either or, they're both great products.

I've been using Appguard for years. Its absolutely amazing. It will stop pretty much everything in its tracks. Its not difficult to setup. We have a thread here at the forum that can assist you. I have used AG for a few years now and have to say it is great. It uses virtually no resources, I've never seen anything actually bypass it in Locked Down mode, and the support for it is excellent. There is an AG thread where (I think) instructions are given on how to configure AG for use with Sandboxie. AG is the one security software application that I refuse to be without; it quietly and effectively does its job.

I think the $35 is for a year of updates but the software should stay activated beyond the single year.

 

AppGuard is like kevlar,but with out the weight.

 

AppGuard is fantastic. It's the closest you could get to DefenseWall on a 64-bit PC.

Also OT. NoVirusThanks EXE Radar Pro is lifetime? Does it work on 64-bit?

Most defiantly yes. If it wasn't for Defensewall, thats the combo I would have, maybe will anyway sometime.

I have a license and have set it up to work with Sandboxie in the past (on a 32-bit box), so it can't be that hard to do.

From what I understand, it's lifetime, but an upgrade fee, with any major update.(v3 to v4 for example)

Not sure with 64-bit, but other members here run them together so I know its possible.

 

It's possible with 64-bit. There is a thread in Sandboxie forum describing how to do that.

 

I'm running AppGuard along with Comodo D+ and honestly you don't notice either one. Very light and very secure.

AppGuard is not difficult to set up providing you understand how its protections work. You will find a lot of useful information here at Wilders - just search for threads with AppGuard in the subject. It would be a good idea to read through the help file before configuring it. Make sure that the sandbox folder is in User-Space. If the sandbox folder is located on an additional partition, it will be treated as part of extended User-Space automatically. If it is located on your system drive (usually C), you will need to manually add it to the list of folders defined in the User-Space tab.

i would go appguard. its a very nice program. very light as i run it on my netbook.

 

I'd like to offer a dissenting opinion to those here re: AppGuard.

I ended the 30 day trial a few weeks ago. It told me that during the trial, it had blocked >600 events! Wow, I was so protected. Except, I did a clean install right before the trial, and during the trial the only things I did were: install/play Diablo 3, check email without opening attachments, watch youtube. No "dodgy" behaviour at all. Oh and also I was on holiday for about 2 weeks, which means that AppGuard was making 40+ blocks per day on my clean computer.

The protection level is high, but it stops a lot of stuff that doesn't need to be stopped. I could say the same for unplugging my computer from the power point.

 

Sandboxie and appguard are a great combo. I ran Comodo firewall, sandboxie and appguard for a while. It was light and very stable. Like most have said you need to get it configured correctly. Once you do that you're good to go. If you look up sandboxie and appguard, a thread should come up. I believe "ShamrockKid" should what to add to appguard for sandboxie to play nice.

I have never used the Appguard but I would definitely say 'to DefenseWall'.

IMHO the DefenseWall is at least of the same strength as the AppGuard. I've plenty of tests where it beats all avs by protection. Unfortunately I havn't seen any tests on the AppGuard. In my opinion they of the same type of protection - HIPS. So no need to have them both on the comp.

I tried the AppGuard and it went smoothly on my comp - no any noticeable impact. So I would use AppGuard if there were any reliable tests from AV-C, MRG ets showing that it is as booletproof as the DefenseWall.

 

It seems unlikely that AppGuard will get included in the AV-C comparative tests as I believe their testing methodology only applies to AVs. I did ask MRG to consider including AppGuard in their tests but the response I received from Sveta was that MRG currently have no plans to include AppGuard in their tests.

Whether or not AppGuard protects as well as DefenseWall on 32-bit systems is a matter of speculation. On 64-bit systems, the question is irrelevant because only AppGuard is currently available for 64-bit.
