So there are only two responses to the poll about favorite VPNs.

If you use VPNs, and haven't responded, why is that?

Are you worried that it's not anonymous enough? Wilders already knows, by the way, which exit VPN you're using ;)

    Thanks :)

For the more paranoid, by the way, Wilders doesn't update "last post by" for polls if you just vote, but don't add a reply.

There are six replies now. Maybe I'd missed some when I last posted. Thanks, all :)

    First post EVER.

Was browsing this forum yesterday and someone somewhere mentioned Jondo for Anonymous Services.

    Question: Isn't this a Catch 22?

Going to the Jondo website in an un-anonymous status isn't that like knocking on the front door to a foreign embassy (you know the FBI is taking your picture :ninja: ).

Even worse I clicked on the Anonymity Tester :ouch:
the entire thing is in http and not https, by the way.

To get anonymous you first have to knock on the front door, right?

"So?", you say. And now that I think about, there is a silver lining. If I have found my way onto some list  at least I have lengthened and diluted the list with just another guy that never does anything more harmful than USING CAPS on a political forum.

I didn't indicate "how" I access their services, and though they do not get a lot of mention on this site, based on the mechanics of how they work, I would trust them to a degree over TOR :)

Jondoe has worked with LE before, I'd be careful.

    I'm tired of this myth.

When it was a part of JAP, they were served with legal documents. They complied and then immediately used the power of open-source by changing mixes and changing code that enhanced security and rendered the possibility of it happening again to zero.

JAP was not "working" with law enforcement. They complied with a legal order and then legally rendered it useless.

Read the details of the case before you malign some very good people.

Thanks Lockbox, this makes me feel better about my decision to sometimes use the service.

So still no general consensus on who is the best and most secure VPN?

I reviewed mirmir's list and it seems there's a "top 10" for sure.

All you're going to get is a general list. You would need to know all illegal activity that was pursued heavily, on each provider, and the outcome...in order to find 'the best'. Even then, you may have 3 'bests'.

VPN's couldn't care less about your security I've found, which is just as important as privacy. I doubt half of them know how to configure mod_security, snort or IPS rules. The amount of port scans you will get will triple, fire up your firewall log while on the VPN and you will see.

You will find 90% of VPN servers are on VPS servers not dedicated servers, so you get crap speeds & less security IMHO. I doubt they are very well secure as I've said, and I'd say a lot are compromised by hackers to host/send Malware/Host Botnets.

go airvpn or mullvad or for more speed bwprivacy theyre not too shabby as well ;) , thats my top 3 and the first 2 deffinitely know what theyre doing and yes they care about theyre customers and theyre security and im happy that they dont asign a dedicated server to your ip that would make you an easier target and remove your anonymity , remember blend in with the crowd dont try to be special ;)

I do not understand the security mechanics of a VPN or how you would evaluate a provider' security configuration thoroughly. This thread has primarily focused on the privacy aspects of VPN's and not security. I would like to learn more about how to evaluate a VPN in the context of security and any references that could be supplied on how to to do this would be much appreciated.

BitInstant/Coinapult with a cash transfer at a local bank, using an anonymous email address. Connect the Bitcoin Client through Tor to receive them. Extra steps would be to transfer them to a second wallet (through Tor) and/or launder them through Bitcoin Laundry. I don't know if this is *really* needed with BitInstant, but if you have the time and can afford the small fees, it can't hurt I guess. I've used all of the above and had no problems...YMMV.

Get an anonymous email account (I used Tormail.org, but BitInstant has a message that they're down? Check. A 30 Day Countermail address will work too). EDIT** Tormail looks ok to me.

Start Tor Browser bundle (to get Tor going). Open Bitcoin Client, connecting through Tor (You have to change the option if you haven't already). Stop and restart to make sure you're on Tor. You'll have to wait for the Blockchain to update probably, depending on when you used it last.

    Make a new Receiving address.

Go to BitInstant. Pay from Major Bank branch > Bitcoin to email

Enter email address, amount, email address again (don't know why it's in there twice, the site has changed a little since I last used it).

Send funds. Enter a PIN. Takes you to TrustSecure where you pick a bank and print a deposit slip.

Go to bank and send the cash.

Come home and check the email address in about 30 minutes.

Click on the email link which should take you to Coinapult, where you put in your Bitcoin address you're receiving with. Send it.

Restart Tor and Bitcoin Client (If you shut them down) and wait for funds.

For Bitcoin Laundry, just follow the directions on the site...but I don't think you need this with BitInstant. This would be for if you sent coins from a Mt. Gox account you owned...I would think.

That's about it. It worked fine when I did it a few months ago. If you're unsure, maybe send a small amount to test it until you're comfortable?

I agree with most of PaulyDefran's advice. But I have one tweak. I wouldn't bother using Tor for the BitInstant transaction, because you will be walking into a bank to deposit the cash in their account, and you will surely be photographed. Just use a throw away email address, created through a VPN.

Given that, I do think that it's important to use at least one cycle through BitLaundry (better two, or even three). Do use Tor for the Bitcoin accounts that you use with BitLaundry.

    FYI see https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=2072869 .

    mirimir,

Are you thinking something like this:

Picture of depositor linked with Trustsecure transaction.

Search of Trustsecure reveals Tormail address.

Picture now tied to Tormail address.

Facial recognition software (Driver's License Database?) obtains real world ID tied to Tormail address?

Can't you just create a one-time Tormail address too? Aren't you tied to any address you use? I would think just using it once is the protection. But I can now see how BitcoinLaundry may be wanted...thanks for the exercise! :D

Yes :) Or maybe they get your vehicle license from surveillance video ;)

Yes, you could use a one-time Tormail account. Except that now your real identity might be associated with Tor use.

10 minutes may not be enough unless you live next to the bank :D
