    :'(

About every 5 - 10 minutes SpywareGuard is alerting me that the same BHO and browser hijackers are attempting to take over. I know from experience that Wilders is where I need to come from help.

Could you help me yet again? I posted my HijackThis log below. I would be grateful if someone could recommend some corrective action. Let me know if I need to send further information.

    Thank You So Much!

    Jim M.

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

NOTE....even in safe mode you may have to open taskmanager and end task on some of them before you can delete them.

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\VVSN

    Reboot

Now, empty your TEMP Folder / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Run HJT again and pls. post a FRESH log. Thanks.

Re: Need Help -- BHO and Hijack

    Marianna,

Below is an updated HijackThis log. However, I'm still having the same problems (overall) with BHO and Hijacker Alerts from SpywareGuard. Also, even though I checked the items you requested in HijackThis, several are still in the log.

I did have some problems in carrying out your instructions (even though they were very clear), as described:

First, I couldn't check the following .EXE items in HijackThis to fix them:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\VVSN\VVSN.EXE

    C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\MAMO.EXE

My problem was that when I rescanned HijackThis, I didn't have the programs listed before me. So I couldn't check them like I could the other items.

Second, after rebooting into safe mode, I became real concerned about deleting files from TEMP folder and Temporary Internet Files folder. {I do assume that your referring to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP and C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folders as well as the C:\TEMP folder. Am I correct? **Sorry Marianna, but you are dealing with a novice here.} But to the real point -- in the C:WINDOWS\TEMP file I was denied permission to delete certain files with .tmp extensions on them. In the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder, there's a subfolder "Content.IE.5" which then is further divided into something like 10 more subfolders with names like "4pqz05a7" and so on. I find the file "Desktop.ini" inside several of these folders (yes, at least several) and it warns me that this is a system file -- Am I sure I want to remove it b/c my programs may not work? I guess I'm just nervous about deleting these. Maybe I need some reassurance or some further guidance.

Third, and this may be important, SpywareGuard is now alerting me to a BHO labeled:

    1 B7D753B-1981-4bd2-91F3-6D055EE11A0
    Prog. ID - Context1.Curl.1
    File Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NDRV.DLL

Most likely related to this is ZoneAlarm alerting me that NDRV.EXE is trying to access the internet. I've never seen that before. Wonder what's up with that?

Finally, VVSN and MAMO had similarly been asking to access the internet for the past several days before we ran the HijackThis fix. Maybe they are "history?"

Sorry this has gotten so complicated, Marianna, probably b/c of my relative lack of experience with computers. I'd appreciate any further guidance and help in eradicating these aggressive little buggers.

    THANKS!

    Jim M.

    HI Jim,

I do assume that your referring to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP and C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folders as well as the C:\TEMP folder. Am I correct ? YES :)

Finally, VVSN and MAMO had similarly been asking to access the internet for the past several days before we ran the HijackThis fix. Maybe they are "history?"
    Yep- they are GONE :)

Download cwshredder here Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Then check the following items in HIjackThis - close ALL windows\browsers except HIjackThis and click "Fix checked":

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://c:\windows\TEMP\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NDrv.exe

Then reboot and use AdAware as described here:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

    Try using this:

Then use the Disk Cleanup Utility to empty all your Temp folders.

Reboot and popst a FRESH log.

    Take it "easy" :)

Re: Need Help -- BHO and Hijack

    :D

    Marianna,

I THINK YOU'VE DONE IT! Everything seems to be back in the corral now with no nasty alerts from SpywareGuard.

Also, Ad-aware found an "executable in my Windows Media Player" and took care of it.

Incidentally, I went to the website for Disk Cleanup Utility but it says it's for Windows XP. I run Windows 98 SE. Do you know of anything comparable for Windows 98, as I'm still having the same problems with my TEMP folders.

Good Night, and again, Thanks A Lot!!!

    Jim M. :D

P.S. -- Does my log below now look clean?

    Thanks Marianna.

    Oops. . ...

You're right .... there is a Cleanup utility built into Windows 98. That shows you what a newbie you're dealing with here.

Anyway, I've located disk cleanup, and I'll see what it will do.

Thanks again to you and Wilders. You guys are the best!
