Well, in my defence, I read a bit of it. ;)

Of course. Those who like it, have far fewer reasons to be so vocal. It's a win for them.

Just because people were wrong about mice doesn't mean they're wrong about touch screens. Faulty logic in my opinion.

This is possible. But people not saying "I like it" is not evidence that people like it. Yes, they might not be vocal... or they might not exist.

It's just an indication, who is wrong or right we will only know in a few years.

Yes, and I'm one of like... 5 people I've seen saying they like it and I've seen thousands of posts saying they hate it.

Yes, maybe Apple is hiring users to say they hate Windows.

Or maybe people just don't like the UI.

That's it. Some people seem to think that way, despite being so ridiculous. It's almost all about wrong perceptions and misconceptions.

    LoL!

Hey dw, I would like to quote one more snippet from that article for you to analyze, because it looks very accurate IMO:

Isn't that a bit of an urban cyber-myth? The first ball-mouse invented by Telefunken in Germany was considered a bit of a breakthrough in the early '70s.

The fact is that people generally tend to prefer a mouse, even to using a touchpad on a laptop (I often use a USB mouse).

Touchscreens have regularly been proved to be tiring to the user. They obviously work well on tablets & on Star Trek tricorders, but on planet Earth in the early 21st Century, they are a bit of a dead duck.

I think it's a mix of several interests and emotions, prevalent in different sizes in different people.

  11. My experience on Linux with tablet UIs on the desktop has not been good at all. And while I'd expect MS to do better with "user friendly" than most FOSS projects, I think the basic problem is that a touchscreen tablet and a desktop PC run on hugely different paradigms. Sure, these days you can attach a keyboard and mouse to a tablet and get a desktop; but that doesn't mean that the same GUI will work just as well for both modes.

But as for Microsoft's success with Windows 8, who are we kidding? They're a monopoly. They have their own older OS to fall back on. If Windows 8 flops, that'll just mean more Windows 7 sales, and an opportunity to build up even more hype over the release of Windows 9.

BTW. What's the licensing policy on Windows 8 look like? I noticed that Windows XP Home let you install on 3 different PCs per copy, whereas Windows 7 Home Premium lets you install on only one.

People asked me to stop using this word to describe Google search, because alternatives exist. It's true, monopoly is an exclusive control. Neither Microsoft nor Google have an exclusive control over any market.

Exclusive control is different from control/predominance.

Okay, now I'm with you to an extent, lol. However, I see a long time coming for people to make that kind of a change. As it stands right now, touch on a PC is rather pointless. It is not the same as the introduction of the mouse though, imo. Neither the net nor computing in general has made serious enough changes that touch would be considered a better alternative. The mouse and keyboard isn't going away for a long time, nor will standard PCs.

I don't think touchscreen is going to replace mouse. It's just a complement, one more input method. There may be scenarios where it proves to be useful, like, for example, avoiding the need to explain for a child why nothing happens when he/she touches the screen. lol :D

I just cannot for the life of me wrap my head around touching this big screen I'm looking at, lol. It gets dirty enough without me touching it :D Also, I'd think webpages would have to change drastically in order to take advantage of it. And if they didn't, what would be the point? Okay, I touched the start button and touched my browser button...now I have to use the mouse because I'm certainly not touching link after link. Also, yes, I'm thinking this far, lol, what about security issues? Whoops, the 5 year old saw a cute blinking picture on the screen, touched it and said "Look Daddy!"...and you're nailed :D

This is getting weird.. so many assumptions! Like with every other input method, people can and will use it badly. This is not a valid reason to stop it from being available. We Want Freedom! :isay:

Of course it won't replace the mouse, but it is essentially a bit of a gimmick now from MS, & I am seriously starting to think that their designers are 'losing it' in expecting this nonsense to catch on. I mean, who in their right mind would pay more spondoolies for something that is a pain in the arse? LOL

Or if you happen to be in a Zero G environment en route to Mars ...

Lol, I'm not trying to be "weird", as I said, I'm just thinking far ahead :D That's also not being used to strengthen my argument that touch is pointless for some devices, that's just my brain running along the tracks.

The reason touchscreens are unsuitable as input devices is that using them on a desktop or a laptop not in tablet mode requires you to constantly have to juggle between three physically distinct locations despite having only two hands and to cap it counter to gravitational momentum. As for mice initially they were inferior to using keyboard shortcuts as they require you to shift from the efficient touch-typing position to one hand on each and back again. We use them now because as the GUI developed there came a point where there were just so many icons, windows, and menus to jump between that the inconvenience of shifting to the mouse was outweighed by the interminable time required to select the right option using the keyboard. The truth is that mice really aren't ideal either. Oh DOS we beseech thee come and deliver us all from this madness :)

You just found a scenario in which I would gladly use touch over a mouse, lol.

I don't see it as a gimmick, just as one more choice. "Windows 8 provides no-compromise experience", one can pick whatever input method better suits his tastes. Maybe you will want to use your cheekbones to click on something, who knows. ;)

Of course, it could be a conspiracy between Microsoft & the manufacturers of screen cleaning fluids & wipes. ;)

If you think DOS is better than doing what we do now...you may want to hold your breath, because you just found yourself outside of Daveski's spaceship heading to Mars :D

Conspiracy is a strong word. Of course, they have monetizing plans, but these are not in the dark.
