Yeah, 'cause they're way cheaper than normal laptop screens aren't they? o_O

I can understand them on tablets, but I don't really see what's wrong with a keyboard & touchpad on a laptop. A touchscreen seems like pointless overkill for the sake of it.

Oh, that's easy. I can already hear the millions of footsteps from the millions of laptop users running to the stores to buy new expensive touchscreen-equipped laptops. All I can say is that it's a bloody good job we aren't in a global recession or something. ;)

Windows 8 will work very well for owners of laptops already running Windows 7. The Metro's despising of some is exaggerated and the desktop mode will have many improvements that will only appear with RTM. Apart from that, Windows 8 comes with several other nice compelling new features and improvements in all key areas (security, stability, performance etc) compared to Windows 7.

Maybe, but I really am starting to wonder how many will actually upgrade from Win 7. I certainly won't.

I don't think many will.. I know I won't either.... And I did upgrade from Vista to 7.

I definitely will not. Windows 7 is running too nice on the laptop I have. Don't need a tablet OS with a clunky GUI and I will not be buying anything from the Microsoft store, ever. If according to Microsoft Windows 8 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, why support Windows 7 until 2020. That right there is going to keep Windows 8 from being fully adopted across the enterprise, especially if the economy stalls again.

I honestly think that most of Win 8's sales will be with new computers. Win 7 hasn't even received a second service pack yet (if it ever will).

What's the correlation between one thing and the other? Windows 7 is going to be supported until 2020 because this is the date with which Microsoft compromised itself in the product support lifecycle of Windows 7.

New computers are pretty much the biggest source of sales of all Windows releases. 8 will be the same, if it even reaches the number of Win 7 sales. As for service packs, 7 doesn't need one. It's likely running about as good as it ever will, and nothing catastrophic has come along to mess things up. MS (and most review websites the public relies on) are mainly touting the new UI, a UI far more than just a few people dislike. And with Aero now being taken out completely, that doesn't help quiet those voices.

When Windows 8 gets released, stores all over the world will make an incredible marketing of touchscreen-equipped devices (notebooks, desktops, whatever) running Windows 8.

The prices of existing devices will be lowered, several new touchscreen-equipped models will be released and sales will end up exceeding by far those of Windows 7 when it was initially released.

As for economic crisis, even in its darkest moments, worldwide sales of PCs didn't slow down.

    No they aren't.

I thought you had read the article.

Your quoted text doesn't say a thing about keeping Aero, in fact, it plainly says they have moved beyond Aero. Nor in the comments does anyone correct the outcries of Aero being gone. Btw, the source of my info: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404647,00.asp

Hmm, I was thinking about design goals for Aero, which weren't forgotten. And transparencies are not gone.

It's funny I just read that article and Metro with its new tiles really looks like Windows 1. As for the nonsense of touchscreen laptops becoming the default I made the mistake of ordering one last time that fad was tried and touchscreens are a menace. What makes that delusional man think that laptop buyers are going to fall for that one again? It only takes two minutes with a demo machine to realise what a nuisance they are.

Can you imagine holding your arm up all day for a touchscreen desktop or laptop? I can't......

One reason may be that such devices are getting improved to run with Windows 8:

Well for the sake of MS, they should probably clearly explain things instead of burying rambling thoughts in a way too long blog post...might help to prevent articles like I linked from coming out and causing unnecessary storm clouds ;) :D Btw, your optimism is admirable about the success of 8, but I'm just not seeing it. Lowering the prices of existing devices will just drive customers to those devices, not the new "whizbangs" with 8 on them. Also, touchscreens are really only suitable for phones and tablets.

Even then, while neat looking on commercials, in every day practical use they're not so fantastic.

Ok, now all they need to do is give you the choice of Metro or No Metro. :)

We will see how real customers will react.

Yeah right, the same was said about mouses too...

Can I ask why the devil I'd reach up and touch my screen, when I can move my hand that is probably already resting on a mouse or push a key, which is probably already resting on a keyboard? Do you see what I'm saying here? The technology is not the issue, the issue is practicality. I really don't care if they make touching easy to use, or if it's better than it used to be. It's still pointless on such devices, and is just another thing added to price.

Oh yeah. It was supposed to be simpler to just click in a few keyboard shortcuts instead of moving the hand to a mouse so far away. Oh. what a fail this mouse thing really is. [/irony] lol

Most people I've seen talk about Windows 8 do not like the UI. The vast majority.

I just don't see it outselling Windows 7.
