Inspired by trjam's rant, here's a rallying call to former VET users.

Brothers and sisters, "maintain your rage"!

What Computer Assassins and Total Defenestration have done to functionality and customer service makes Avira's marketers look like saints.

I remember when CA bought out VET. They created a freeware version called Inoculate IT. That was a great program.

    Yes!
memories:: i remember using kaspersky version 1.07? i think it was, Dos Gui.

The fastest lightest version of kaspersky was 3.533, memory footprint was less than 2mb and it really flew.

Vet was made here in australia, but detection rates was not that great, but it was fairly quick.

    memories....

thunderbird, geez that really flew as well

Kaspersky was originally AntiViral Toolkit Pro or just AVP if I recall correctly. I used it back in 1995 or 1996 and had purchased a "Lifetime" license for around $25. Wasn't but maybe a year or two later I found out my lifetime was over and they were going to a yearly subscription fee ;)

My first AV after the big boys of Norton and McAfee. Very fond memories of AVP Silver and Gold.

    @gery

Reliable AntiVirus, a Romanian Antivirus by GeCad; very light footprint and great detection rates. I had a license for about 2 years until Microsoft bought out RAV about 10 years ago and that was the last we saw of it.

The CA Corporate version used both a CA engine as well as VET and was pretty much the best out there for a while.

But again those were innocent times. Then the biggest issue in Malware was the proper plural of virus, and trojan droppers, keyloggers, and rootkits were just starting to percolate in the twisted minds of 2nd graders.

RAV was a pretty decent antivirus at the time. Everybody thought Microsoft was going to make it better. They bought out Giant Antispyware and turned that into crap also.

Anybody remember the Microsoft Anti-Virus (MSAV) that came with DOS and Windows 3.1?

A lot of things have changed, several companies had to undergo changes or closure:

    RAV - acquired by Microsoft
    BOClean - You know :|
    Giant - acquired by Microsoft
Ewido - Acquired by AVG (For what it's worth, they did make AVG better)
Virus Chaser - Downsized, it seems to be a Korea-only product now
McAfee - still exists, though acquired by Intel

I'm actually surprised AVIRA (H+BEDV) and AVG made it through the tougher times since they were fairly small companies at the start.

This list brings back memories of the old DiamondCS days.

Wasn't that something to do with their lifetime license of TDS? Have you seen their website lately? Seems that they are a reseller only now.

1st antivirus was ThunderByte or TBAV (not sure how widely published it was) which at the time was pretty good...but like all small companies it was sold/swallowed by larger ones...in this case Norman sometime at the end of the 90s, I believe.

Anyone remembers ADinf32? Or the "split" between Network Associates and McAfee, the brief time for which there were two VirusScan products? :D

Somehow, it seemed more....innocent and fun in those days, though that may have to do with my age at the time.

BTW: I want Command Anti-Virus and eXtendia AVK back! :D

Wonder what happened to the once-famous Polish AV MKS_Vir. I mean, ArcaBit is still around but I think it's not connected to mks_vir anymore. We used to have contests for free licenses (Anyone remember Stormbyte's contests for free ArcaVir licenses)? Don't see much of that anymore.

VET is dead long looong time ago, both as an efficient and safe av program (I myself used it in their ancient days).

Better move on to any other renowned av vendor.

Dr Solomon's HomeGuard was a personal favourite of mine until it was swallowed up by McAfee in 1998.

    A great AV in its time;

MCAFEE PLEADS WITH DR SOLOMON'S TO REDUCE VIRUS DETECTION RATE

In a surprise development, McAfee asked Dr Solomon's Software to reduce the virus detection rate of Dr Solomon's product because McAfee is unable to keep up with the volume of viruses, and can't achieve the same level of virus detection.

I realize I am really getting off topic here but the first Anti-virus I purchased was Touchstone Pc-cillin 2 for Windows 95. I wasn't called Trend Micro back then. It let through the very first virus I was infected with. Babylonia. That thing was wicked. A file infector.

I keep forgetting that CA sold the AV biz to a Venture Capital Group, which formed Total Defense. I really loved this from their website:

    30 April 2012
A 'Huge Step' For Computer Security

Total Defense, one of Long Island's newest software security sales companies, may not yet be a household name. But the 10-month-old business has two heavy hitters speaking for it: John Walsh of the popular TV show "America's Most Wanted," and former New York Giants football defensive end Michael Strahan.

Ahhhh- a reality TV host and a retired Football player: Bulwarks of the Security Industry.
