you don't have to; you can generate a URL with all the settings that you can save as a bookmarks or you as your HomePage or whatever.

    no cookies needed! :)

    you're welcome! :)

i still use Google but only for the News and the Maps.

everything else can be handled pretty well i think by either Ixquick, DuckDuckGo or Startpage.

I checked Google in the poll only because that is what I've been using for years, mostly out of laziness but also because of it's features and options. I'm signed up on Google, but have my settings set for the most privacy possible - that is, if Google actually adheres to the settings.

However, like so many other Internet users who take the time to get at least a little educated about Privacy on the Internet, I am becoming more and more skeptical of the claims of the mega-sites like Google and Facebook that they only have their users in mind when data-mining our information.

I don't believe there is an immediate eminent danger from what sites like Facebook and Google are doing, but what about a year from now? Or 5 years? The information and profiling data they are collecting will exist virtually forever and can be used in so many bad ways it boggles the mind. What they are doing is utterly unethical and should be illegal.

I've given DDG a cursory try and my initial reaction was I didn't like it. However after reading this topic, I'm going to give both DDG and StartPage a harder look.

One quick additional comment - The apathy and indifference of a vast majority of Internet users is how these mega-sites get away with what they do. I try, when the opportunity comes up, to talk to people about the security/privacy issues of the Internet, but too often my advice falls on deaf ears.

What's the difference between startpage and ixquick? They seem to be same. Is startpage more secured?

    the interface is different.
they are secured equally, they're from the same company.

Startpage uses Google search engine, and Ixquick from different ones.

take the time to try each one to see which one you like the best.
also, check their web sites for all the details.
    it's all there.

I've always used Google almost exclusively but have been trying out DuckDuckGo and a couple others lately.

I use Dictionary.com as the default search engine in my browser.
