Glad I am on windows,at least there is no denial of windows needing security to stay safe.Better then a false sense of security not needing any.

 

I've sold my Mac, assembled a awesome PC, and with the rest of the money bought a nice bottle of a 30 years old Scotch...

ROFL,A good one. Seriously though Macs are good and steve jobs was a brillant man,but whoever started the mind set of macs dont need protection or get virus are either misinformed or just flat out lie,probably both.

I have heard this from sales people as a selling point so People either really believe this or just lie leaving people with false sense of security.

I hear you. I fact, I was in an Apple store with my son-in-law (who is a super Mac freak), not too long ago and I overheard a salesperson telling a customer the same thing. It actually irritated me to the point that I thought for a moment about going up to the unsuspecting lady and telling her to find another salesman, because this guy was an idiot. (Or even going to the manager).

My better sense kicked in and I just kept my mouth shut.
Nothing is immune to attack these days, and to be telling a potential customer something like that borders on criminal, as far as I'm concerned.

 

yes Macs are not immune but I really don't believe this study. Mac malware is not so common, I guess.

 

Well, if it's one thing I've noticed over the years (be it hardware or software), the more popular something becomes, the more enticing hacking it becomes to the 'bad guys'.
I've seen it over and over again. For example, people bragging about how their browser (or whatever), is far safer to use than another. (But it was simply simply because the market share paled in comparison), only to find later when it became more popular that they were vulnerable after all.
If I were to become a bad guy , my first targets would be the most popular, with the largest market share, and then I'd work my way down from there.

Still, I think it's a sin for any salesperson to be telling a customer that their products are immune to malware, or other forms of attacks.

 

Yes I thought of saying something as well, but my better senses kicked in,besides the wife telling me dont start trouble.

 

I have both a Mac and Two Windows PC's in the house. I have run Sophos on my Mac for nearly two years and it has never picked up one piece of malware, apart from when I have thrown the eicar test file at it to wake it up. In the same two years how many windows malware have we picked up? None is the answer. I think there is a lot of hype, scaremongering from certain AV companies that want you to buy their software.
My answer is, that if you are on the internet, use protection. Nothing is infallable, but providing you are sensible its not so scary out there.
I hate to see all these Mac v Windows threads, people reckoning they are better than others etc.
Just use what you use, and use protection and be sensible and stop all the needless scaremongering

 

Well Macs are useless for me . . . they would not suit my gaming needs. (Although i only play games like 2-4 hours a week nowadays)

 

At the suggestion of a friend, I entertained the idea of getting a iMac last year, and frequented the iMac forum to pick their brains. I asked what was a good AV and was virtually attacked. They said you won't get infected unless you let it in.
Thankfully, after adding up the cost of building an iMac the best I could for about $1,699 if I remember right, I could buy a PC with WIN7 64x, a 1.5TB HDD, 8GB RAM, a better video card, a better CPU, Microsoft Business Office, Photoshop Elements, Roxio 2011, a 2TB external Seagate HDD, and a Epson scanner, and saved about $100.

 

I was going to get a Imac for every one in the family to share this year on income tax but since we already have three pc in the house we decided better of it.We also needed a new wash machine and For the money of a imac cost we got a new front load washer,another Xbox 360 for the kids and a 32 sony lcd 720P TV for a small bedroom.

 

Although I use my Windows machines the most, I have a Mac as well. For the 2 1/2 years of owning mine, I haven't got infected yet. For my Mac protection, I use Comodo Antivirus and Dr. Web Light, just in case I ever do come across an infection.

 

My Mac is clean as a whistle.....
