Yes I know it sounds foolish but I gave up on antivirus real time..If its not sluggish..its the toolbars or false positives..so I chose to go with Comodo Firewall and Malwarebytes Pro and have had zero infections now for a month..I also have Dr Web Curit handy for a scan should I need it..Todays antivirus programs are getting too big and cater to newer pc's and when you install an older version of their program they discourage you by either not updating or working period....In the past you could install older versions of most anything with no problems

I've been hearing a lot of talk about Webroot Secure Anywhere...Is it really that good? I never tried it before. I usually try to implement Free protection, I got sick of forking out the money for so long.

    Ah ha!

Spoken like a true gent. That is the absolute very reason once the first major HIPS opened up on this security software front some time ago, that i dismissed all AV's from off my systems for a more performance enhancing security with really Better! solid protection. The proverbial Zero-Day attacks were toast as soon as HIPS waltzed into the arena. Looks like very conservative users still impliment them whereas others like to run todays AV suites.

It comes down as always to a personal matter of choice of which setup proves the best security without any of the overhead lag.

this is just flat out not true anymore. Maybe at one time but no longer. Todays AVs are actually smaller in size then ever before, they are lighter in use then ever before, system impact is very minimal now compared to 5 years ago. You can still install older versions of quite a few of these products. Yes there are exceptions to some of the above, but for the majority of the industry, AVs are alot better option today, then quite a few other products.

Easter you mentioned HIPS. A very strong point but as we also know, this type of product is also finding its way into more and more AV products today.

To me, the AV market is stronger then it has ever been, in quality, protection and value for the money.

why don't you try it out?....the installer is only 640 kb....just try the trial for 30 days....and then you'll not be forking out money for it.....you'll be digging....

lol I'm living without an AV as well. I follow safe practices and download from trusted sources. USB autoruns disabled, no way I could get an infection.
And if I'm to open up something dangerous, there is sandboxie to be safe.
Installed my malwarebytes pro yesterday though. I'm also doing this as an experiment of how long can I do this without getting an infection.

And to the person who said todays AVs are lighter, I remember running avast 4.8 on a 300MHz AMD K6. That compared to avast 7 - I can't stand the slowness after installing it on a 1.6 n270 atom.

That's you. The reason I installed it is to have something to stop ITW viruses in case.. Because this is a shared computer so I can't risk others' stuff.
Don't think I'll get anything bad in a while..

After I took the Antivirus off,it was like a breath of fresh air. I would not suggest going completely naked though.

I can't remember last time I've seen a problem created by an AV software. Avast, Avira, BitDefender, Nod, Panda, I tested all of them in the days I was using AV and not a problem, maybe just a few false positives.

So what if you browse to a legitimate website that has been hacked? nothing is 100%. There are some antivirus and suites which are light, dont have many false possives and dont use toolbars.

iScream - mbam has limits - first to name java and other is javascript. anyway the latest java trojans went through all browsers and antivirus software like a hot knife through butter. all full blown av-programs slow down with standard settings - some more, some less.

I haven't used a resident AV in years,
no need, just for an occasional scan or to scan
something before commiting it to my real system.
Although going without an AV is not for everyone,
one can be quit safe running without a resident AV.
    There are other solutions.

Besides WSA, if you want to go with a free program, UnThreat AV is very light.

Thats the beauty of todays newest security innovations. One can peel away an AV just as long as you replace all the important coverages with a solid variety of well-built apps designed to monitor & intercept potential problems.

It's long been an accepted practice mostly for users who are very familiar with knowing how to apply just the right apps to make up for the AV Suite coverage vectors such as HIPS, Anti-Executables, sandboxes, virtual apps, etc.

Ordinary unlearned users ARE much better off with today's all-purpose Anti-Virus solutions IMHO.

I had an anti exec for a week or so and it started acting weird, so got rid of it and am with Online Armor free, but do have MSE 4 running.

I just don't like being out there in internet land without something, although I really think OA free is pretty solid protection.

Agree! Net land is no place for any good machines to enter on unknown spaces but with so very many excellent options available for relatively Strong security around, it should never be a problem to even mix n match different security wares so long as they agree to cooperate together as a group without serious issues.

    NO real-time AV here, either.

For several weeks now, the only real-time security that I run is Private Firewall. It is firewall + HIPS + process anomaly watchdog + email anomaly watchdog + system anomaly watchdog. A free 5-in-1 security app, well-supported, with an itsy-bitsy profile. Not a cough in a carload. :thumb:

Chuck57 I hope it was not Faronic AE that was acting weird.Any way, MSE and OA is a nice combo and if you upgrade to the OA premium you will have advanced mode for files and registry protection guards along with banking mode if needed.
