    Hello,

Normally when Windows update keeps asking for the same update, I go through the MS procedure of basically deleting the required folders and this has always worked for me and my friends.

Today, after installing all of MS updates, I restarted my system and kb2656369 needed to be installed again. I then checked my history and saw that it was correctly installed (did not fail)but I told windows to install again anyway. Same thing after another restart.
After multiple tries I tried MS Fix-it tool and this failed to correct the issue.
I then tried the manual procedure from MS and this also failed.
Since the manual procedure from MS has always worked for me I am at a loss as to how to correct this issue.

Does anyone know of another way to correct an update that does not install?

I know I can contact MS for an update failure like this, but this takes too long and I will probably just format and start over if no one has any suggestions.

    Thank you.

(forgot to mention that I tried MBSA and it stated that the above update was not installed)

If kb2656369 is listed in Add or Remove Programs, uninstall it and try again.
Be sure to enable (tic) the box "Show updates" at the top of the Window in Add or Remove Programs.

    Thank you for the reply.

One of the problems is that it does not actually install the update. Windows update will state that the update was installed “successfully”, but it does not appear in add or remove.

    The installer is correct.

I have tried the manual download and again it states it was installed successfully, but if I restart the system or wait for approx15 – 20 minutes, the notice pops up again.

At this point, after 3 – 4 hours, I think I will check tomorrow and format the system if it’s still not working so I don’t waste any more time. This might sound funny but I just don’t trust the reliability of the computer since it appears to me that something is really corrupted in this installation.

    Thanks again.

    @oma53,

I had same issue with .net 1.1 update/service packs on several XP machines, used this tool to clean up the .net mess. This tool removes individual or *all* installed .net versions requiring complete reinstall of any/ all .net versions that you want.

Note: reminder this tool removes individual(may not fix problem) or *ALL* .net versions.

    Edit: To change some wording.

    Thanks everyone.

I removed all the dot net versions and reinstalled and now everything is working fine.

I remember seeing a drop down to select individual .net versions to remove

Well now, I learned something very valuable here, good job ParaNodes.

Yes, in this particular case, it was wise advice to remove *ALL* .net versions,
as the point of corruption was unknown.

It's been a few years since I've had to use it but your right, there is a drop down, my recollection was cleaning a few machines where removing one version didn't fix the problem and ended up nuking the entire .net stack for a nice clean/new .net install, brutal but works.
I'll edit my post to reflect that.

Just to add, I used to remove all versions only on XP machines since I was not sure about Vista and 7 as it came with .net.

Actually this tool won't remove the OS built in .net versions i.e XP= .net 1.0, Vista/W7= 2.>3.5 can't remember which, W8= .net 4
I'm reading around the web that If you have .net 4 installed a repair install of .net 4 may fix previous corrupted versions.

Caution! This is a very powerful tool. Please read A Stebner's Blog and readme file carefully. It appears he's still actively supporting this tool and answering questions.
