During my several years of firewall experimenting with an XP machine that had both
a slow CPU (1.8 Ghz), and using a dial-up connection, I found that nothing
I tried beat the XP native firewall in terms of efficiency. The packet filtering
stopped everything the Symantec, Sygate, GRC, PC Flank, and Auditmypc firewall
test sites threw at it, and it never crashed. It will notify you if a program
requests in-bound rights. If IRC, it does not filter IGMP, but, as a home user,
I didn't think that was much of a threat. Not being a networking expert, I can
only comment that it has served me well, and I'm very comfortable with it.
The machine did not boot any faster even when I tried pure packet filters like
CHX3 (SPI) and SoftPerfect (No SPI). I particularly liked CHX3, but as it grew
older and unsupported, it began to conflict with newer software, so I reverted
back to the XP fw. That box is stilling running with the same configuration,
albeit now as a back-up system, and on DSL, behind a router. I notice in the
logs that it is blocking Protocol 41 outbound packets generated by my DNS server,
which is done by most of the up to date third party fws.

I supplement my XP firewall (and my newer W7 Machine fw) with other system hardening
and software security measures, and I'm a happy surfer.

If you decide to get into third party, bi-directional fws, that offer other
security features, then that's another discussion. Been there, done that,
    don't use them. YMMV.

DefenseWall is an excellent choice if running 32bit. ;)
