The Kaspersky engine? That's even better than Vipre! If it uses that, is free, and light, I may have to bump it into my top 5 free AVs.

Does anyone know if it can be installed without the firewall?

Is the Beta going to be live today?

I am from India & its saturday today. What day is there where ZoneAlarm main is located. If its weekends then do they release stuffs on weekends?

    Curious to try this Beta.

Have never tried ZoneAlarm AV so curious to know what this Free software adds to the Free Security World.

Anyone can upload the installers at upload sites?

if Za uses kaspersky's enterprise level AV engine, how can its detections be less than retail version?

Surely they must be on par?

Yes probably bad luck with the samples.

I posted about the retail version as both these are the same products with few stuffs missing in Beta. But then too you are right & I should not have posted about the retail version.

No, sorry. They have not managed to fix all NDA related issues and some product bugs are being fixed. Link will be live on Monday or later.

AFAIK paid version uses Kaspersky engine + Kaspersky signatures + Kaspersky heuristics + ZA engine + ZA signatures.

It is possible that this product uses only the ZA engine, or a cut-down Kaspersky engine without Riskware detections. That would explain any differences in detection rate (which is not confirmed to begin with).

Thats correct Firecat, thanks. For the moment the kaspersky engine in ZA free beta is limited in riskware detection (PUP), iSwift/iChecker fast scanning and automatic treatment. I have not seen the ZA behaviour screen options (KAV PDM), so may there may be limitations also there... or may be not.

This may change if ZA development receive enough feedback via the ZA betafeedback page.

On installation, is there an option to activate only the firewall and application control? Also, the description of the application control seems the same as the description in the "advanced firewall" in the paid ZA av + fw. Are these the same (2 way fw + application control in free version = 2 way firewall + advanced fw in paid version)?

Right now easy to guess, signature based just the same as kaspersky but without PUP and overall slower scanning due to the absense of iswift ichecker technology. It would be more interesting to see the performance of the overall package. The KAV part is the least interesting... since its well known.

Are the users who already running it getting AV updates? As they removed the beta temporarily, are the AV updates live or they too suspended?

Not that I am aware of. Historically ZA has always been delivered with a firewall as THE basic component + other components according to the version chosen. This will be likely the same in this free version. You can turn it OFF but core drivers hooking at kernel will be still loaded since they also oversee the anti-tampering features.

While the main firewall executable (vsmon.exe) is also the executable responsible for the antivirus (on access, on demand scanning, etc). This executable will be there with or without the firewall.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Fax

They should be getting AV updates, free beta version connects to the same AV update server(s) than the retail version.

Not that easy to guess since a lot of trojans are detected as adware/spyware and vice versa. It will definitely be a bit lower than KAV itself, though it remains to be seen whether ZA's own engine can compensate that.

Zonealarm does seem quite confident in its own engine so I think it should be good.

BTW, I think that all proactive features of ZoneAlarm are developed in-house by Check Point and are not provided by Kaspersky (i.e. Kaspersky only provides the scan engine).
