    Someone did.
"I somehow managed to overlook those settings" was his courteous reply.

Previous versions of Avast used to require an email confirmation as part of registration. That was more complicated and sometimes problematic if the reply was delayed. Now registration is easy and quick (when it's working properly of course), which is a big improvement. It means I can install & register it in the field. As to why registration is required that's the company's call and a very small inconvenience in exchange for an otherwise free antivirus IMHO.

Isn't registration required for the paid versions as well?

Yes, but I believe for a different reason. Typically paid versions use registration as the means for linking the license to the user. That has advantages such as making it easy to retrieve the license if the product needs to be reinstalled. I used NIS for a few years and I appreciated having a Norton account where I could check the status of the subscriptions and recover the licenses when necessary. No doubt it benefits the vendors as well by facilitating marketing, but they never spammed me and so I didn't experience it as a problem.

Okay, thanks. It was just that your post made it seem that only the free version required registration.

I'm sorry but I'm starting to be a bit confused. What "lot of problems" are you talking about, exactly? And are you personally having these problems?

I mean, yes, there are problems discussed e.g. on the Avast forums. But the same was true even before the release of v7 (problems with v6) etc... it's quite normal. This is software, and in such massive scale, you can't really eliminate absolutely all the compatibility issues and things like that.

FYI, as of now, avast 7.0 is already in use by about 62.3m users.
Do you really think so many people are unhappy with the product?

SKB doesn't use Avast! He comments on the 6 and 7 release problems.

Years of experience with what I initially thought was "buggy" software has taught me that, as much as it pains me to say it, my own system's configuration may very well be the culprit. Sometimes programs just won't run (or they create instability) on a given machine, and while the user is quick to point out that "it only happens when such-and-such is installed", it often comes down to some registry remnant, some leftover driver, some conflicting update, etc, that is specific to that machine that is causing all the grief. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say this is the case 50% of the time. Bottom line, before accusing the program, take a look at your own computer. ;)

    New Protective Features
AutoSandboxSuspicious programs are now automatically placed inside the avast! Sandbox. When the program finishes, a comprehensive report is generated and, based on the program’s behavior, you are given a recommendation on how to treat it in the future.

Browser SandboxingEnabled by a single click of the mouse, it allows you to completely isolate the browser from the rest of the system – even if the browser gets hijacked, your system stays clean.

Out of curiosity, is it Avast! new feature called "Browser Sandboxing" anywhere near the protection offered by SandboxIE on 32-bit Windows systems?

    Thanks.

I was a long time user of avast!, but after some issues on my machine, I did a clean install and am only using Sandboxie Paid and Comodo Firewall/D+...........No real time AV, and couldn't be happier.

So there were no boxes to uncheck during the install to prevent Chrome's installation that you were actively monitoring the whole time and there was no option for a custom install either?

Having a "Custom Install" option is fine. But apparently, when people chose any of the other options, the Chrome install was automatic. If that is okay with you, fine. It's apparently not okay with people who didn't choose the Custom Install, and got stuck with a bundled browser they didn't want. But hey...62.3M users can't be wrong, can they?

No it's not ok with me If that is in fact how it works. As I don't personally use Avast or Chrome I thought I'd better ask if there were any boxes present to be unchecked in a typical install or whatever Avast might call it or if there was a custom install that I would expect someone like larryb52 to look for, as he isn't a person new to computers or software installation. As far as 62.3M users go I don't know. Right now I'm only asking larryb52.

So why did you only ask about the Custom Install? It's been documented that with the custom install option, the boxes are there -- already checked -- to be unchecked if the person sees them. As far as the other options go, there have been numerous reports of people never seeing the opt-in boxes for Chrome.

As I said I don't use Avast so I was asking a experienced computer user if he chose the typical install option and were there any boxes present, or if as I'd expect him to do, did he chose a custom install. And if he's as tired of companies throwing stuff on his computer without asking as he says he is, I'd expect him to look for a custom install option as a part of his normal method of operating. So either he wasn't thinking or wasn't paying attention or both.

it gave no warning of impending install of chrome & made no mention, to me most users take the default install , I did this for v6 and had none of those issues , sorry just don't like programs added to a new computer without my knowledge of approval...

Ever since v7 was introduced i use express install. Yet i've NEVER ever got Chrome installed as a collateral thing. I assume all of you can read so how hard can it be to UNCHECK a checkbox that says "Install Chrome blablabla" ?

Ok, the auto update had one bug but when doing a clean install, all you need is to read and not just smash next button...
