I alpha and beta test a lot of games which involves a lot of forum activity. I have only actually had a pc nine years, in that time I do not think I have ever witnessed so much anger and hate! lol!
If you release new software, no matter how much it has been tested, to millions of people all with different levels of borked systems running God knows what in the background you will always have problems.
It's how quick you solve them, that matters. To say "they should have waited two weeks" shows how little you understand. Without releasing the program they would not be aware of the issues.

VLK, could you elaborate on this? Also, I just did another compatible install, now with .1426 and from the shields, only Script shield was installed, remains the same after reboot.

Thanks for your response. And as you stated...whether it's 50 or 100, it's statistically insignificant.

A change in Free version .1426:

You must create an account in order to register, not simply provide a name and email.

    System restore :D

Why is it necessary? :doubt: You don't have to register when using Avira or AVG ;)

Good question. But it's confirmed by VLK that registration is now required for Free Avast.

The new mandatory accounts, the demonic EULA. It's clear, they're trying to resurrect Cthulhu.

Is it simply that one must create an avast account in order to acquire the free version license, or must one both create an account and configure their avast free version to connect to that/an account?

What is required to establish an account, your name, e-mail address, an ID and password?

Avast 6 registration = supply name, email address and country
Avast 7 registration = create an account by supplying name, email address and a password (or use an existing account, if you prefer).

Both done directly through the product. Very very similar.

    Thanks
    Vlk

    Hi Vlk,

If I may seek to clarify something... will avast 7 registration and association with an avast account "through the program" be a one-off event or will it establish the kind of connection that would be used to report statistics and remotely manage the computer? IOW, would such registration automatically open you (the user) to remote management (whenever that is rolled out)?

Just like everything else I use like forums, E-Bulletins etc.
I did the upgrade, and my current registration stands as is. My current registration expires in August. So at the very least, according to the above, you won't have to supply your additional info until you re- register.

It should demonstrate: Why should anyone register for a free AV? :doubt: It makes no sense at all ...

You use a full fledged product without any limitations and you complain about making a FREE account? C'mon ppl, who are you kidding? Would you prefer being forced into using some adware toolbar in order to use it (like some others do it)? Or overexcessive ads all over the program with constant popups for paid version? Nag screens? I think not. Making account is a very small fee to use avast! Free Antivirus...

    This is my answer too.
You have to register with a name, woow,so rude...to provide an email, woow,is Avast a spammer ? (how many emails did someone registered get from Avast,i'm curious)...and a password, not the banking one :p ...If someone consider this too much for his/her privacy, better use another AV,there are enough free choices out there, just MHO.

The info doesn't even have to be a correct one. I just use my first name, but you may just as well enter John Doe or some made up name. Except the e-mail has to be your real one so you can later use "I forgot password" feature in case if you, well, forget your password. The process is very transparent and doesn't take long so i don't see it as annoying. You just do it once and then you're off the hook. When renewing FREE license, the account remains, you just have to re-register new serial key and thats it (unles they changed it with v7.0).

It's clear cut how adware toolbars generate money for any companies who use them. How does registering with Avast generate money for Avast?

Who says it has anything to do with money generating? Registrations have been part of population statistic ever since i can remember. This way they know how many active users they have so they can in advance estimate various figures (like the upcoming trends regarding server loads, how many new users they gain in particular timeframe, how big are the user number jumps on program releases and so on and on).

You were the one who made the association between companies who use adware toolbars and this current need to not only register Avast, but create an account as well. Are you saying all those years that Avast registered its users, vs having them create an account, they didn't know how many active users they had? Again...what it the difference/advantage/disadvantage now in requiring the creation of an account vs the previous way of simply registering without creating an account?

Before, they tracked users number with registration keys. And since they introduced the account feature, they've made it manadatory. I don't see anything wrong with that since most vendors already do this anyway.
