Can I get help shortening boot time?

Have a 2 min. boot time.OS XP The only things on start up are
AVGNT
SG
Startup monitor
bounceback launcher- which is my backup drive.
Tried defrag boot.no difference
Any advice appreciated .Thanks.

 

AV's and security software often slow down boot time.. You could try something other than what you have and see if that changes anything...

 

If Kerodo's suggestion doesn't work, you might try to check for damaged or slow sectors in the HD, since you don't have lots of startup items that explain the delay. If your HD have bad sectors, HDAT2 might recover them (if possible).

Download and burn Hireen's boot CD (hxxp://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/).

Boot from the CD, choose "Dos Programs" > HardDisk Tools > HDAT2 > wait a few seconds for automatic configuration and choose your HD from the menu (check "capacity" to help you identify your HD) > Drive Level Tests Menu > Check and Repair bad sectors.

Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer.

How much ram do you have installed? Not sure that will make a difference but I suspect it would. Also, which boot defrag program did you use? For boot defrag I've had luck with Puran and Mydefrag. Besides that, maybe try a different antivirus that can boot up quicker than AVG.

 

Use Autoruns to disable any unnecessary items loading at boot time.

If the problem is a bad sector in the beginning of the disk (very common), disabling startup items, services, etc.. and defrag won't help. f you're looking for something more simple, try chkdsk c: /r

Was your boot time ever much better than 2 minutes? If so, when did it start deteriorating?

 

Disable any bootup scans that may be enabled in your security apps.

 

Hi frank. Does it take two minutes for the desktop to load or does it load fairly quickly and then the processor works for two minutes loading everything?

desktop 1 min 30secs before I can open any thing

Used to take 1min 10 secs total

 

imo sounds like a driver issue this happens often, most of the time it ends up being a network or gpu video driver.. as stapp said does this happen if you boot to safe mode? sadly to really figure this out would be a issue where you would have to eliminate things from being the problem...i would recc you run chkdsk c: /f /r though

 

It might be Prefetch. You can tweak Prefetch in the registry to only load certain files or completely disable it. I tried it on Vista, setting it to load boot files only, and it actually decreased boot time quite a bit.

After you tweak the setting, you can safely delete the folder C:\Windows\Prefetch. Windows will recreate it when you reboot. But I'm not sure if it will if you disable Prefetch. You'll have to recreate the layout.ini file manually though. After you reboot, run from the command prompt this:

Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Reboot and the new layout.ini file should be in the Prefetch folder.

 

In safe mode desk top I'm able to open stuff within 6 secs.

 

I suspect it's probably AVG. There are more things running at startup than you can see (not just AVGNT), like various services, some of which are AVG services.

 

Since you are running Windows XP, you might want to try an old Microsoft utility called BootVis. I don't believe that is available any longer from a Microsoft download directly, but you can still find it on sites like Softpedia and MajorGeeks. It monitors your boot-up process and will provide metrics and charts on what was occurring and for how long. It might give you some additional insight.

I disabled Avira Antivir and things have speeded up.Strange because I've been using Avira for many years with no problem .Time to switch Thanks again.

 

That's interesting. How to diagnose that problem? is it easy to check through the device manager?

 

Try accessing your AVG program and see if there are a few processes you don't need. If it's doing a boot time scan eliminating that step would help.
