I've found that this happens because of CCleaner Start menu cleaning (not checked per def. AFAIK).
Can someone please upload PC Settings.lnk Remote Desktop Connection.lnk and Store.lnk from C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. 32bit here, just in case.

i was thinking: this is the perfect opportunity for Linux to get a foothold in the desktop market, be it the home or business market.
they have until Windows 9 to play with.

i don't see the business customers rushing to install this on their machines, seeing most of them are still clinging to XP.

unless M$ make some 'needed' changes between now and the RC i think this is gonna be a big failure, especially on the desktop side.

I don't see the business customers rushing to install desktop linux either. ;)

But I do agree, this is a huge stretch for much of the market, including business, and business will no doubt pass on this one for desktop purposes. But then again, business is always behind and slow to adopt new things.

Look at what Ubuntu did with Unity.. there was a similar reaction and lack of initial acceptance there too.

I think any substantial change will always be difficult to some extent and for some people. I can see arguments on both sides really, and I think only time will tell if 8 is a move in the right direction or not.

Hardware acceleration in Flash seems to be broken. Probably my ATI drivers.

Ubuntu 12.04 beta was released today. Definitely worth checking out. :thumb:

    not really

People who are afraid of change/ won't move to Win8 definitely aren't going to be moving to Linux.

Even with considerable vista hate for 2 years linux didn't manage to get a grip on the market.

My System Reserved Partition is 350 MB. Do others have the same sized partition? (200 MB of used space and 150 MB of free space)

I have only 1 partition..no system reserved partition

I remember seeing a 350MB partition in the DP, but I don't see one now in the CP, unless it's hidden from Disk Management.... I'd have to check with a Linux disk to be sure...

Edit: Just checked. No 350 partition with the CP. I installed 8 over 7, so maybe that made a difference.....

there's also people who are not afraid of change but just don't like the change they're seeing. ;)

Kerodo mentioned the Unity controversy on Ubuntu.
this seems pretty similar to that.
people were reluctant at first but have seemed to adapt.
or switched over to Mint. ;)

of course, you don't have the luxury of being able to change your Windows/Desktop manager on Windows.

anyway, i'll give the RC one last try when it comes out.
hopefully, M$ will have changed a few things between now and then.

Where did you manage to find the ati drivers? I can't find any so I can't run dual monitors.

People saying this will be good for Linux are wrong, I run Linux on dual boot and spend a lot of time in Linux forums and believe me there's a lot of unrest at the moment as regards unity and gnome 3.

Regarding the 350 MB SRP. You get it if you install Win8 into unallocated space. If you install Win8 into a pre created partition you don't get a SRP.

The Win8 SRP is larger than the Win7 SRP as it contains a 158 MB Winre.wim.

It's easy to copy the SRP files into the C: drive, make the C: drive Active and delete the SRP. I only created the SRP to see if it differed from the Win7 SRP.

I was actually suggesting the idea of staying with Windows 7. All Linux OS I run in VirtualBox. Windows 8 will probably sit on an alternate machine for a learning experience. And who knows, maybe it will change more to my liking by the final release.

I suppose I'm just glad this old fellow (=laptop) here, has no UEFI... :D

The killswitch is also the cherry on top of the cake. I already expressed my disapproval on a thread about it, sometime ago. My machine, my rules. My money, my rules. :p

Anyway, I saw some screenshots over Softpedia, and it doesn't look that bad. It got me concerned for a moment. :argh: But, the lack of the Start Menu makes it look virgin.

I don't like it either at first glance, but I think you have to see the metro desktop more like a start menu. You can create groups add apps and shortcuts.
