I just purchased a new motherboard, a Biostar TA990FXE using an amd 990 chip-set. I have read reviews of this board running Ubuntu 11.10 but for some damn reason I cannot get Ubuntu to install using either a usb stick or a cd-rom. I get as far as to Unetbootin's menu, I hit install then I get this every time.

    Code:
HDI0_Get_Identity failed for dev/sda invalid argument
I get that error either with usb or cd-rom & it just fails right there. I am using the same exact drives I had with the previous motherboard. One is a Sata 3.0 Western Digital, the other is a Sata 3.0 Seagate. I installed Win7 on the Seagate just fine using the dvd-rom but not Ubuntu. I can see both drives in Win's disk management. Both drives are operational. If I boot from the WD I get the Grub error menu, of course from my previous installed board being missing & me reformatting it from windows, the WD was my default boot up first drive. I tried some bios tweaks like Legacy mode for the drives, ahci, sata on chip, fail! Is this chipset even supported, I cannot locate Ubuntu's works/not works sticky like they have for wifi adapters.

Go to the BIOS and try setting the hdd mode to legacy from native. Also use latest 11.10 and not 11.04

Sorry for that, it's 11.10! Wasn't thinking! I tried legacy mode, failed again! I may try unplugging the cd-rom & the other drive to see if that'll work.

Not sure if it's relevant but I have had problems installing linux on a couple of occasions. Once it was a bad iso download and another was a bad iso burn.

Spikey B raises a valid point, download, check md5 sum and then burn real slow on good media.

The iso checked out. I downloaded a fresh one to no avail. I tried removing my second drive as well as the dvd-rom. I removed the keyboard, mouse & printer. I tried different usb ports. Still gets stuck at the same place. It works on my kids computer so its not the stick. May have to wait for a bios update!

If you have bandwidth, I suggest you download alternate installer and give it a spin.

you have to have 1st boot form usb in bios also you need to have fixed drive setting only then usb boot work as far cd check if cd booting before hardisk

can you able to boot live cd without installing 1st check that if that working then your cd room and ubuntu iso both ok if not then 1st check cd

also burn cd in slow mode like 16x they hardly fail burning iso at high speed give buffer errors manytimes i face that fedora

also you can try live cd on other computer as well see if it works

if live cd work then use gparted and formate your ubuntu left crap partition

you can also use this (recommended) cost you just download and cd :)

    http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=partedmagic

use gparted tool and formate ubuntu leftover from partition you installed sometime leftover give problem they stuck bad i face problem in installing gateway linux since then clean drive 1st form gparted then install

for installing please check this one
