Active Mode vs Protocol Filtering

I was reviewing my settings on ESET Nod 32 AV5 today and found that I'm a little confused about Active Mode vs Protocol Filtering. In active mode I set it to default and then added my 3 web browsers. Then I get to Protocol filtering and it looks almost the same to me as far as what it entails. I know I'm probably screwed up here so if someone can kindly tell me or suggest as to what I should or shouldn't add to either one. The user guide helps, but comes up a little short for my knowledge. I'm not looking for a heavy security blanket, but I do want to make sure the essentials are rightfully scanned. I told you that I had 3 web browsers checked in active mode and I was going to check all 3 again in Protocol filtering plus add the Comodo firewall to the PF, but I think I'll wait and just go default until I hear from someone knowledgeable on the subject. Basically there's no need to switch any application to active mode just to make http traffic scanned. If you decide to do so, you can set all applications but streaming media players or download managers to active mode. If an issue occurs, set passive mode for the problematic application.

It's not necessary to put those in Active Mode though, right? It's more less if you want the traffic more thoroughly scanned, isn't it?
How about Protocol Filtering? What is exactly the purpose of that setting and is there any apps that should be listed or added to PF?
I hate to be a nuisance but I have to know what these settings are for before I can use them and the way the user guide is written it doesn't explain a lot to me.
Maybe Active Mode and Protocol Filtering should just be left alone for most part. If you can explain these 2 settings to me briefly and in layman's terms, I'd be greatly appreciated.
