    zpro,

I have the same question. When I get home later I am going to load this and Avast free and test them out. I too had to sacrifice running them together.

If anyone here has these two running together could you "chime in" and let us know how its going?

I like both of these products but on my machine they didn't play well together. Maybe now they will. The new PF readme says the "avast.setup" issue on PF has been addressed. We'll see.

I'm using them right now and I think it is OK. One of the changes in the log of the new Private firewall version states that it solves a problem with Avast installation. I'm using the pro version but it's almost the same as the free. Sometimes I get Firefox browser freezes mostly on flash heavy pages but I think it's from Avast, not from a conflict between both.
Just forgot to specify that I'm using them on a laptop with XP SP3.

Not a good start. I came home and uninstalled PF and Unthreat. Rebooted and then installed the new PF followed by Avast Free. Installed fine but within 5 minutes PF was stuck on Office Profile.

This is only my first experience with the new release. I am going to clone a clean OS - one that has only seen ESET for both AV and Firewall. That way I will know the install will be clean of registry errors.

Either way I will report back later. Might be a day or so.

I suspect my install was dirty - but - I did fully uninstall the two products and rebooted before trying the new combination.

    Here as well, Bill.

Only issue (and Greg is aware of this via ongoing correspondence) is that the "trusted publishers" list is not (always) retained after a reboot. (It can be repopulated manually via notepad but that's obviously a crude workaround, especially in light of the retention issue following the next reboot.)

This is not a major issue for me as I have everything set to manual control with auto-response disabled (and am reluctant to rely on whitelists in general).

Other than that PF runs very, very quietly and unobtrusively and has proven to be an excellent addition to the security arsenal. :thumb:

    Well, as of right now,
Had some issues, with left overs from CIS, or PW, or something else,
had to wipe the drives, and reload again....<SU_KS>

This time, just have avast free 6 with all turn on... and firefox loaded, with extra security, plus all downloads get uploaded to virustotal, for scanning.

virustotal, seems to catch allot under 25megs.

    So, current
    Avast 6 (free)
    Windows 7 firewall

Firefox -https, don't track me, noscripts, ..etc

    Cheers
    ;)

Seems to have fixed the import/export issue I had on an intermittent basis with "Trusted Publishers". :thumb:

The one thing I noticed was that for some reason the box (under manual control) to disable auto-response was not ticked when I imported my prior rules/settings. However, after ticking the box again it was preserved after a reboot.

As always, PF continues to run smoothly and quietly on my XP Pro SP3 system.

So, is PF running better with Avast, or is there still some weirdness going on..

Would like to run PF, but want to be sure, if the bugs are out.
    Thanks

    :doubt:

I use the new update from the Private Firewall on 1 of my 2 comps.
I have the PF 2 days ago installed no one problem on my W-7 64 bit.
And on this PC use i never a other firewall then Windows whit UAC.

But then read i this on the Emsisoft site.
    http://www.emsisoft.com/en/kb/articles/tec120224/
So i thought what doing ID-Vault in the Private download?
I have ID Vault not installed becourse it could by a Wrapper.
The download do i by Softpedia.com
Belong ID Vault realy by the Private Firewall?

Then came a 3/4 day later the new Avast free version 7 and my comp was immediately blocked.
I have PF uninstalled and wait now on reactions here.

Yes i know i have no experience whit "The Private Firewall" but i use earlier the OA Premium and the OA Free.
They are very good but whit many PU"s when you a install a programm.

I did the PF running in the Basic mode,so i don"t know who this recognized between the new version of Avast (Free) and the new Updated PF.

I am waiting on comments here.

It's not a wrapper, it's just a free version of a legit app. Everything is ok, it does belong to the Private Firewall installer.

Why don't you download your software from the developer's site? In this case:

Its a good tip becourse i did not found this downloadpoint, and i always download from Softpedia because there are almost never have anything in it.
But 1 month ago found i the AskBar installer in Avira Antivirr.
So i thank you for your tip.

But why did Avast (Free) in combination whit the Private Firewall my computer lets crash?
I have no settings changes, except The WebReb on "off".

The best way is to try again?
Or someone has a suggestion before I try it again?

Would you happen to know if the free ID Vault that comes with Privatefirewall still has a limit of 4 accounts and 1 credit card?

The latest version of Private Firewall came with a fix for some incompatibility with Avast, but I don't know if it was related to the problem that you experience. What was the last version that you tried? Current one is 7.0.26.4

    Here is the changelog:

    Version 7.0.26.4 (02/15/2012):

    - Addressed issues observed with settings export/import feature.
    - Addressed issues observed with Reset to Defaults feature.
    - Implemented additional modifications to address specific Avast behavior.

I have a few questions about using Private Firewall.

I am running XPsp3 with Avira Free and MBAM Pro (both in real-time) and Windows Firewall. I have only dialup internet so am cautious about introducing additional drag on the system.

I am wondering if Private Firewall will be better than Windows Firewall and in what ways. Since I only have dialup internet, would Private Firewall slow my browsing more than Windows Firewall.

    Thank you for the help.

AFAIK, Windows FW offers "standard" firewall protection. So does PFW -- but there's more.

Over & above PFW's "standard" firewall protection, PFW also includes:
1- A fairly powerful HIPS (called "Process Monitor")
    2- Email anomaly detection
    3- System Anomaly protection.

If you use PFW instead of Windows FW, there should no discernible slowdown. PFW is very light.

    Hello benllgamin:

How are you doing long time since I saw your posts! But here you are!

I long for the good olde days of Kerio! When men were men and FW's did that and zip else! If you coded one up as easy to work for Windows 7 say by night fall I'd buy it sight upseen!

No one misses Kerio as bad as i do. That Mighty tiny FW kept my system's 100% safe for the longest time even well into XP untill $MS service packs corrupted it's usual routine workings and sadly i had to walk away from it. But i know where you're coming from.

Good and timely topic here nonetheless for me too, since i been away from active internet a couple of years only to find now that i too am in search of a really decent firewall but without the extras which AFAIK no longer exists.
