I've used hiren boot CD to restore passwords on XP. I haven't tried it on win 7 but it might be worth looking at. Sorry to hear about your brother noob. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Noob, I feel sincerely saddened to hear the bad news.
Like The Seeker, I would suggest a Linux live CD, I have an Asus Eee PC without optical drive, but I use an external DVD RW Drive plugged to an USB port which works perfectly. This would be the quickest way to retrieve all windows files (I use Puppy Linux).

    Noob,

My deepest sympathies for you and your family in these tough times.

In regards to recovering his data from that netbook, I had a similar problem with my sister's desktop a few years ago [not that she passed away, though], just she was running Win XP Pro and, somehow completely forgot her logon password running as Admin.

I suggested her at that time to take the HDD off the computer and take it to Best Buy's Geek Squad. They charged her US$ 150 at that time, but retrieved the entire contents of her computer HDD without losing anything.

Not the best solution if you'd like to save some bucks but I just wanted to mention it, though.

Managed to unlock the password but he just formatted the computer a few weeks ago and there were no recent pictures, just old ones from a few years back :'(

Sorry for your loss Noob, that level of grief is the hardest thing to bear. I've had it, it does get better eventually but you never forget. You can keep going to keep your brother's memory alive, share who he was with the pictures and stories and your love for him. You have friends, let us know if we can do anything.

Time is a great healer my friend, the pain NEVER goes away but you learn to live with it.Be strong and talk to him, he is around you.

Noob life is tough and in moments like this nothing helps you to restore time to a previous moment . No words can help you out but remember sometimes people are taken away from us and we need to live with their best memories . I feel very sorry . I know what you are going through.
As far as the problem i would also recommend the Ubuntu option
ps - to badyou lost the pictures too
