What are the "Must Have" extensions for Firefox

Does anyone use Remove It Permanently? I've been experimenting on a portable, it seems to have a great potential.

 

What has happened to ABP? It looks completely overhauled, and I'm not a fan. Lists have to be updated one by one, the options seem..lacking, and a bigger issue is that blocking individual things now is completely awkward and sometimes doesn't even work. One thing I noticed in that regard is that the small "block" tab that shows up above block-able elements either cannot be clicked on or simply does nothing if you do manage to click on it. An example of what I'm speaking of http://www.wrestlezone.com/. There is an annoying video half down the page that always plays. Hover over with with ABP installed and see if you too cannot manage to get the "block" button to work. It "hides" itself when you try, leaving you to constantly being able to only click on the video itself and not the button.

Anyway, I've noticed these sorts of issues elsewhere, and pop-up ads are suddenly getting through, even with the "allow" ads filter shut down (by the way, as far as that idea goes, it's well intentioned but working poorly in my opinion.). This is the kind of behavior I've always seen and expected from Chrome ad blocking, not Firefox.

 

I can't see the block button either.

I have 11 scripts blocked on that page with RequestPolicy!

I'm having almost as much trouble with Guy Fawkes' blog.

 

There's a lot of images on that blog that are normally wiped by ABP. I really do not want to have to start screwing with NoScript-like stuff again, especially considering I'd have to do it all outside of Sandboxie first and then each time I come across a page I need to have scripts on.

Bah, darn it ABP. Why'd he have to go and change what was an almost perfect addon so much? Some people need to learn that old saying "If it ain't broke...". On another note, I can see Piers Morgan is looking like a buffoon with his "testimony", lol.

 

dw426, have you looked into https://adblockplus.org/en/known-issues ? Might be helpful for your problems.

Yeah, I keep forgetting you are running Sandboxie. NoScript & RequestPolicy can be a serious pain in the arse to set up on a page. Especially if I have the tooltips turned off, like I often do in SeaMonkey.

I don't know about your side of the pond, but over here he managed to get a late night talk show. I've seen it a number of times when I just don't want to deal with sleeping pills

But, yeah, Sandboxie is on here. I suppose I could allow access to the entire profile, that would solve me having to constantly fix settings. What it doesn't solve is the shell game that is white listing scripts and the fact that no one in this household can deal with it for more than a week. I can, but I surf enough that I just don't want to.

 

My TV has a Piers Morgan filter, so I'm OK. If only that was really possible eh? Or maybe a filter that could just be set to blocking annoying lying pillocks.

That sounds a tad on the complicated side. Are you sure it isn't just easier going back to NoScript?

 

It would be far easier to just allow access to the entire profile. Besides, even with NoScript I'd have to do that, just to keep the settings intact. Otherwise Sandboxie wipes them out every time it closes. The problem though is not allowing this or that, or whether NoScript is feasible or not. The core issue is that ABP has changed and/or having serious issues for me. I'm going to hang around its forums a bit and see what I can come up with.

 

I honestly don't have much experience with sandboxes. Perhaps I'll look into them one day when I get a bit more computer savvy.

 

I have found out rather quickly the "block tab" is not just a problem for me at their forum.

This was a bug fixed in ABP 2.0.3. It works now as it should (at least for the example you mentioned).

Still not working on flash-based content, actually. Along with many ads showing up compared to a couple of weeks ago, even with acceptable advertising turned off.

I can't confirm that either. I assume that something is screwed-up on your system. Have you tried deleting your old filters completely and re-importing the subscriptions? You can also try a new profile with

firefox -p

and test if ABP works there.

 

Already done and no change for either issue. It wouldn't be a system issue anyway, as my system hasn't changed in a couple of months, and nothing on it would affect an extension. But yeah, tried all that and no dice.

 

A bit off topic, but I know you're interested DW. In Chrome 17 beta you no longer need the experimental extensions API to use the proper adblock iirc.

Some questions, though:
1. Have you tried the new profile with only ABP installed and did you newly subscribe to filter lists (rather than import the ones from your old profile)?
2. What filter subscriptions are you using?
3. Can you give some examples for ads not being blocked?

My 2 favs are ABP with (easylist+easyprivacy+malwaredomains filters)....also the stealthy add-on wich is the best tool for finding working proxies that I have ever used.

Since adding the malware domains filter to ABP, I have not gotten infected in a looooooong time- at least as far as I know and by doing multiple scans. IMO ABP is one of the best virus/antimalware blockers I've been able to find for free.

 

I agree with you, but you would be amazed how many people don't actually count ABP as a security measure.
