Did the results say which AVs won't be in next year's tests?

Totally agree with your there. As long as Ikarus is 90+, Emsisoft will be 95+.

good protection imo way to heavy even on a newer system i want almost NO impact and thats not what kaspersky is, otherwise i would have never stopped using it myself. 2009 wasnt bad but its gotten heavier through 2011 and just a bit lighter for 2012

If you have at least 4GB of RAM you shouldn't notice any impact on performance. Kaspersky feels fine on this computer, no impact at all.

I agree. The problem is that people always compare AVs they've tried, not concentrating on the actual performance impact (if any). Well there will always be AVs lighter than others which does not necessarily mean that the "heavier" ones are heavy indeed on the system - they are simply heavier than others you have used.

So consensus is Kaspersky is heavier compared to NIS 2012, Bitdefender etc? The impact may not be noticeable on fast pc's but can still be measured using no. of processes, RAM used, impact on scanning folders etc so its good to know.

Having used all these three suites I can say that it is not heavier in all aspects and scenarios. At least for me. In NIS 2012 you can not turn off idle scan (there is an on-going discussion about that in their forum), treating some kinds of malware takes 10-15 min. with constant CPU at 30-35% and Bitdefender is not always easy to work without bugs more than a month.

I said the same 3,4,5,6 etc years ago, BTW. The main point is self-developed product is more reliable and trustful because it is less dependent on the third-party input and more controlled by the own resources. Just a plain logic.

Define newer. I am running on a machine I built 2 months ago with a quad core i7-2600k at 4.6GHz with 16 GB of RAM. Cannot tell the difference between running KIS 2012 and no AV. It does slow my laptop a little bit but it is a 3 year old machine with a 2.66GHz mobile dual core. I still do not find it heavier than any other 2012 suite I have tried. The 2011 version was awful and I did not run it long.

we all have opinions. i actually have 16mb ram here, its nothing to do with ram use its that opening programs, downloads, web browsing, you tube loading etc etc etc all are heavier/slower with it installed. i build and repair pc's i see every av out there. is kaspersky the heaviest? not by any means but its MUCH more so than some others who i will not name due to a vs b

It may not like your machine or something else you have installed. I've seen it run great on one machine and break another. Maybe it's not the product for you, and that is ok. That's why there are other choices. It's always best to trial any product you may be interested in to see what you prefer.

hmm kaspersky 2012 is a mixed bag tbh. it does provide very good detection and removal but it is heavy and has to many settings IMHO. the other thing is that it has toolbars when it can filter webpages fine without them.

Yeah, that's why I always disable those toolbars.

I'm surprised at the award tbh, I expected it to go to Symantec based on the WPDT results. It's well deserved though, despite KL dropping possibilities for power users to modify the program settings (like selecting the to-be-installed components) that I don't like at all. I personally found 2010 slowing me down so much that I often disabled the realtime scanner, but I don't really notice 2012's performance impact except for boot time and on the first launch of new programs.

Everyone has their own opinion and feelings about which product is the best. We are all here to share our experiences and to learn of course! :D

Huge props to Kaspersky for the achievement. They continue to improve and impress each year! Detection and removal is the name of the game, and these guys make a product you can feel confident in.

I also appreciate the fact that they are literally on the front-line of the Vx war being from Russia, and they have one of the most informative security blogs out there. www.securelist.com. Not to mention a great youtube channel with hours of interesting security related discussions. Their 7-part article on Stuxnet/Duqu was top-notch.

I actually run KIS 2012 on an old laptop recently bought for $20 from a friend a t work. spec'd out at 1.5 Ghz & 1gb ram w/ Windows 7. As resource starved as that machine is, KIS runs really good on it. In a couple weeks I'll be giving that laptop to the kids and upgrading to an i7 w/ 6 gb ram. Don't foresee any performance issues whatsoever, considering I'm well used to how it runs now. lol

I was expecting BitDefender or F-Secure to win the award this year but when looking at the summary report it could only have gone to one product: Kaspersky.

Rampastein, Symantec is not even listed under "Top Rated products for 2011."

In my opinion, Bitdefender should have got it. And as for Symantec, "no comments!"

I believe this should have gone to Bitdefender, although Kaspersky is a good product, but it's just so...heavy to run they really need to try and at least make kaspersky a little bit lighter. I know Bd is heavier but it's detection seems to be a lot more consistent that kis.
