Hello and all the best for the New Year to everyone.

Now here is something that bothered me. There is no obvious way in Xubuntu to enable
the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace key setting to log out. The same applies to setting a Compose key (for stuff like ü and special symbols).
Fortunately I found an easy way to set these keys.

<Enable Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and Compose Key settings in one go>

    In /etc/default/keyboard

    add/amend line:-

    XKBOPTIONS="terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp, compose:ralt"

*ralt is right alt (You can choose what you want eg. lwin or caps etc.)

It works for me - no problems.

    Please post more tips. :)

    Thanks mack_guy :D

Instead of alacarte have you tried lx menu editor (lxmed) ? Works nicely for me. You can get it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/lxmed/

I have just added assogiate to my menu.
    Note: You will need java.

    lxmed add.png

The dependencies alacarte wants to pull in are unacceptable for me.

    PS. You forgot kubuntu. ;)

You need to install java first, I installed the latest jre-6u-30-linux-i586.bin (because this old
laptop is 32 bit with 32 bit Xubuntu). I downloaded it to Desktop.

    cd /opt
    sudo mkdir java

    sudo mv ~/Desktop/jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin /opt/java/

    make it executable

    sudo chmod 755 /opt/java/jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin

    cd /opt/java/
    sudo ./jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin

Setting JRE 1.6.0 u30 as Default:-

    sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/java" "java" "/opt/java/jre1.6.0_30/bin/java" 1
    sudo update-alternatives --set java /opt/java/jre1.6.0_30/bin/java

Follwing the second command, there should be output to the terminal something along the lines of:

    Using '/opt/java/jre1.6.0_30/bin/java' to provide 'java'
To double check everything is as it should be, in a Terminal run: java -version

    sudo update-alternatives --config java (Check)

Remember to make the lxmed install script executable ! :argh:

PS. Check this icon theme:- http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/Xquisite?content=69735

So did you get lxmed working ?

Thanks for links to lovely themes. Problem is that my low onboard graphics with only 24 or so MB memory does not do justice to those themes i.e. the default is best visually for me.

When 12.04 comes out I will install it on Madame's laptop - that one has 2Ghz memory and much better graphics. Btw. From cold start on my old one best I got is 109 MB memory usage !

I tried this and reduced swappiness value to 1 (as this laptop runnuning Xubuntu 11.10 only has 512MB memory). So far it seems to do the trick eg. when scanning with Bitdefender there used to be a small % swap usage. Now there is nothing.

Swap use (swappiness) is too high: Ubuntu is too slow and uses the hard disk too much - Solution

mack_guy, thank you again. Pity you couldn't use lxmed with default java as it is light, light, light. :) Also pity you can't simply upload your remastered Xubuntu here.

I have just noticed that I have 1 zombie process. It is the xfce4-terminal process. It does not
disappear after a reboot. Strange man.

Yup, nothing to worry about it seems. Not much on the internet about it, one french forum poster made mention of always seeing the 1 zombie. There is also this https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7924 but it is not the same exactly.

Anyway we all know that zombies are like the walking dead. You cannot kill them because
of their dead status. Also they don't seem to eat cpu cycles - probably due to having died.

    :D

No I haven't tried Jupiter yet.

go /usr/share/applications, in defaults.list replace all occurences of "totem.desktop" with "vlc.desktop" (search → replace)

    or do with this command

    sed -i "s/totem.desktop/vlc.desktop/g" defaults.list

    Ocky

sometime is needed importing information to the "mimeapps.list" to works, (finished as above) do this with command:
    cat /usr/share/applications/defaults.list | grep video >> ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

    Have a nice day...

    Thanks for your post sparviero.
I wanted to remove some inappropriate entries from the 'Open With' context menu and was
able to do so by editing the mimeapps.list in /home/ocky/.local/share/applications
Should really be a better way to do this á la Ubuntu.

Do you also always need to manually close the 'Disconnected - you are now offline' notification bubble ?
Several folks are experiencing this, and nobody has a solution. I have tried setting the value to 'false' in ~/.gconf/apps/nm-applet>%gconf.xml to no avail.

it seems that this bug persists, only solution is to disabling notifications, (file renamed) with command:

    mv /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.xfce.xfce4-notifyd.Notifications.service /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.xfce.xfce4-notifyd.Notifications.service.disabled

    to turn notifications back on:

    mv /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.xfce.xfce4notifyd.Notifications.service.disabled /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.xfce.xfce4-notifyd.Notifications.service

reboot is necessary, in both cases to take effect.

    Have a nice day...

    Thanks again sparviero.
In a way I like the notifications and as the others all behave properly, I will just leave things
as they are, hoping for a fix sometime soon. Was looking for some or other workaround
    without disabling notifications totally.

'if you uninstall "xfce4-notifyd" (apt-get purge xfce4-notifyd) and a solution that improves the previous situation. Then install it again from (apt-get install xfce4-notifyd).

notification bubble with "Disconnected - you are now offline" appears, but disappear by itself after a couple of seconds. Now with "Settings Manager ==> Notifications" you can adjust the time.

however, I find the best solution if you remove the "notify-osd" (apt-get remove notify-osd), and you're done with boring balloons.

    Have a nice day...
