It has made it to number two on the google results, this site is what confirmed my suspicions when i got the call, about 30 minutes ago.

Just to be accurate, you probably didn't get a call from the Ammyy people. Ammyy is a legit remote control program offered free to the public, similiar to Gotomypc. The scammers are just getting you to use it to give them control of your computer.

My bad, typo, meant to put ammyy scam people, i know it wasn't really the actual website peoples. Was just giving my thanks to the thread starter, since i google everything that i don't know exactly what it is, an ammyy.com search turned this site and thread up in my second search result.

    @selfcontrol,

It might be prudent to download the freeware version of SUPERAntiSpyware or MBAM & run either or both of those just to be on the safe side. I prefer SUPERAntiSpyware myself. I also use Microsoft Security Essentials. I was also phoned by the Ammyy scammers, I just didn't believe them. I have posted about my experience with them on this site

Have also been attemptedly scammed by these butt dwelling parasites today (2 Indian slurries, one supposedly the other's supervisor). Took a number (haven't even bothered trying to ring, but has Sydney area code) and told them to ring me back tomorrow night. Fortunately pulled out before giving any details away and thanks to all you beautiful people who have replied, found this thread very easily. Now programming my mind for scam the scammer mode for tomorrow night. Not normally my forte, but as a result of this call I, through association, like butter chicken a little less now, and that my friends deserves unforgivable genital contorting revenge!

    oh no, they tried me.....
not that they got anywhere *puppy* i hung up on them before downloading anything as i knew it was a con. they then proccided to try and call me 6 times but i just picked up and hung up, i tried to call them back but lo and behold number was a dud! :'(
so i did a bit of googleling as one would do like and came across this site and also some other tit bits such as an ip 70.38.40.185 for Ammyy.com
i then did some more digging and found this further info:
    IP: 70.38.40.185
    Customer: Maxim Pro
    Address: ch
    moscow
    Postcode: 117042
    RU

doing a bit more digging i found that forum.ammyy.com was great i had a browse and it reads very much like a shell, (not legit)
so i would not recomend it to anyone to use. as someone was having keyboard problems and the support admin asked them to let them into their comp to fix it that rang alarm bells..... need i say more
any way got to go now but will be back with more info if i can hope above helps

Ammyy.com are a legitimate company, their software is often used in business & educational areas so technical staff can have easy access to the computers they work with.

The Indian scammers are trying to manipulate people to download the software for nefarious purposes, which have nothing to do with Ammyy.com themselves.

To put peoples minds at rest Ammyy is a legitimate company I use their product on a regular basis to support my clients. The problem is that these scammers are using this piece of software because it is so easy to install especially for novices. If you go to the Ammyy website and click on this link Got Phone call and asked to launch Ammyy Admin ? Important info on malicious use. It also gives good advise on what to do if you have been scammed. One of my clients was nearly caught with the scam but they rang me and when the scammers rang back convinced them to call me. As my specialty is computer security I was able to trace them and also manged to get a phone number which was in Melbourne (Vic Australia) I am in Tasmania. I rang the fraud squad in Victoria gave them all the details, and they said as the scam was happening in Tasmania they couldn't do anything about it and I should get in touch with the authorities in Tassie. So I got in touch with the Tasmanian police gave them all the same information only to be told As I had discovered that the scammers were operating out of Victoria it was not in their jurisdiction and should contact the Victorian police. Go figure.

Yes, I think jurisdiction is definitely the problem here. The Indian government itself should pull its finger out & shut the scammers down.

    Hello fellow humans.

I feel so foolish!:'( I fell for it. They hijacked my computer. I return later and now my computer won't get passed basic start up. It right away shows up as a black screem, white text, telling me that due to some configuration Microsoft won't start up.

There is a "start normally" option, and a "fix problem" type of function. But neither of them help, it just starts over and ends up at the screen.

I'm not happy because this is a lot of money and I have better things to do with it than buy a new computer!

Please, can any one help me out.

Called me again. This time they actually took files from the VM I setup. Now these are probably a different group but what they did was this:

Get you to go to a logmein123 site and let them in that way or download AMMY.
They than connected to my VM and proceeded to download all of the files from my documents and delete the originals.

After this they said it was the "virus" that did it and they managed to "save a backup in the nick of time". But in order to get it back they would have to remove the malware for a fee of $150.

Looks like this is moving into a randsomware cituation. They didn't do a secure delete or anything so you could retrieve the data. The average person may be in trouble though.

    Just watch out.

so i have done some research here, and have noticed some of the following:
    1. the company claims Microsoft or a major isp name, Microsoft itself just got rid of comantra for this very reason, i wonder how many isp's went with them and just didnt say anything
    2. most of the calls are from numbers in the UK, Canada, Australia, USA, and New zealand. now with the exception of India, that seems to be all of comantra's base countries.
    3. they are always someone with a very Indian accent and yet he/she always has a very western name such as bill, john, or Eric.
seems to me that comantra India is plaguing us with calls why dont we just get rid of them?

why has anonymous or some other hacker group not gotten a hold of comantra? i wish i had some knowledge i would personally mess them around for a while

As with x942 I had a sandbox for them to play in and I make no apologies that I'm trying for cam, with a bit of luck and an inquisitive perp we may have something more to add to a transcript in which to enunciate and highlight this con :) .
As yet I haven't received any more calls. Looking at this thread and reading comparable stories I know people have been hit multiple times - I'll leave it until the new year, if unsuccessful I may just post the conversation from the first call, not to make light of it but the argument at the end is quite amusing!

I had one of these tonight and AMMYY wasn't disclosed until the half hour mark - I was playing the old man - that's probably why they picked on me too - 78 I am.
It makes a nice wee story tonight on Woody's Lounge (aka Windows Secrets...) but now I've read all the Wilders thread please note these updates:
    Now Chinesey not Indian.
Now using cover sites with link to the executable - mine was efix.co and it has moderately innocent search presence.

Lol they called me too this afternoon. Got the wrong person.. :))
The guy had an Indian accent.
Man, I can't believe the nerve these ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ have!

Got the call from 999-910-0103. I normally don't even pick up when I see weird numbers like this one , it was my mom who picked up. And the weird part is, the guy actually asked to talk to me - he somehow knew my first name (the home phone isn't even registered under my name). I'm really curious where he got it from, though with today's internet mess, nothing should surprise me any longer..

Anyway.. I see I'm not the only Canadian they tried to trick. How I'd love to have a face-to-face chat with these idiots :D

Well I decided to pull out the ol Vista Laptop and fire it up and update it and everything you know. Haven't played
with it for quite some time because you know how Vista is and everything, you know what I am talking about don't you?
Yea everytime you try do do something you get this window in your face asking you all kinds of questions about do
you want to allow this and do you want to allow that and you know it is just awful. But any way just thought I would
fire it up and update it and everything you know. After I got it all updated and everything I decided to visit this
site and stumbled across this Thread. I read the entire Thread and was amazed with all the stories about this scam
going on. I found it hard to believe all of these stories you know because you just can't believe everything that
you read on the Internet you know, especially now days you know, you know what I am talking about don't you? Anyway
after I closed this Thread I got this window popping up in my face telling me that my Vista Laptop Computer has been
discovered to be part of some Botnet and that my Vista is very bad now and that it can be fixed for free and can be
upgraded to Windows 7. All that I had to do was click on the Continue Button and my Vista would be Upgraded to the
Windows 7 Operating System for free. Well I clicked on that Continue Button and the screen went completely blank.
After about two minutes another screen poped up asking me to enter computer name and account name and password. So I
filled in all the information and clicked on the Next Button which caused my Vista to reboot. After reboot at the
Log On Screen I entered my Account Name and Password and my Vista booted into the Windows 7 Desktop. I could not
believe my eyes you know, I just could not believe my eyes. Just then the telephone rang and this very sexy woman's
voice with an slight foreign accent asked me if I was satisfied with my new Windows 7. I was so baffled that I said
yes I am who are you and how did you know and how did you get this telephone number. She said softly we are trying to
help as many people as we can with this Botnet problem and your laptop is no longer part of that Botnet and to tell
all of my family and friends that they will get help too. She then asked frankly but kindly if it was ok if she could
withdraw $29.13 from my bank account to help support this good cause. She reminded me that I have an orginal copy of
Windows 7 now and that she is an official represenative of this good cause. So I let the tranaction go through. She
withderw exactely $29.13 no more or no less. So I do not see what the problem is here. All of my family and friends
also got help and was Upgraded to Windows 7. The only thing that made me mad was one of my friends was still using
Windows ME and that lady charged her $31.63 now I thought that was an outright scam. You know what I am talking about
    don't you?

LOL! This would be more funny if it wasn't for the fact that these scammers fool many vulnerable people all over the world on a regular basis. I do appreciate the humour though. :)

So i work at an arcade and i got a call from them on the arcades line. and they tell me there techs and are calling to fix errors on my computer. i knew something was up immediately because we only have one computer there an old windows 2000 that runs our slot car track it isn't connected to the internet at all. so i ask did some one from here call reporting problems because there i no way they could know if we had any problems with it. the woman transferred me to their "supervisor" he tried to tell me there had been problems in my area with computer errors and kept pushing me to do what he was asking so i decided to see what he was going to try to do. i am fairly knowledgeable with computers having taken college courses on maintenance and repair but i decided to play dumb he had me go into the system logs and look at all the errors which there was but with that old of computers there will be. next he wanted me to put www.ammyy.com into the run command. so asked why he wanted to go here and he tried to say it would fix all the errors and make the computer run faster. i then made it clear that i had no internet connection with this computer and was not going to attempt a connection, the guy then asked if there where any computers there with a connection when i said no he lost all interest and ended the conversation.
