Hey guys. Just wanted to give you a quick heads-up that we've exited beta and I can finally share the licensing info about Bitdefender Mobile Security with everyone

The app is freemium (part free with an upgrade to premium).
    - The entire antimalware module (including sd-card scanning), Application Audit (the old Security Audit) and remote geolocate will remain FREE
    - Web Security and Anti-Theft (remote lock, wipe, send message, play sound) are part of the Premium plan which is available for 14 days for any new installations and 3 months for everyone who was with us during BETA and logged on into MyBitdefender at least once
    - The upgrade to Premium can be done right from the application either with in-app purchase (Google Checkout) or by entering a pre-purchased key
    - The upgrade to premium costs 9.95$

    HTH

Bkav is also offering a mobile antivirus for Android. Trial Pro version for 90 days and after trial it will revert to Free minus premium features like anti-theft. Maybe pykko or pcslinfo can test its efficacy.

We are getting so many mobile security threads that we need a sub-forum IMO.

And for tablets (Android in my case) which does not need some of the features of mobile phone AVs. My Toshiba Thrive came with a Kaspersky Tablet Security trial which I ended up paying for (9.99 vs 19.99 regular annual subscription). It's basically a stripped down version of their mobile security. As of now there aren't a whole lot of options for Android tablet security but that should change as the popularity of tablets rise.

    @midway40,
Too late for you if you planned to remove it. Avast is looking very good. Dr.Web was very good.
When your Kaspersky subscription expires you might want to change.

    [OT section begins] http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/toshiba-thrive-help/4399-kaspersky-bloatware.html
Thrive makes removals impossible, unlike in Windows where Toshiba stuff could be eliminated by hard work, here, it's simply impossible unless you have rights to the root level.

But in casee anyone has the Thrive and wants to remove Kaspersky and other Toshiba-installed bloatware, it can be done by rooting, and rooting only. All the Toshiba applications have been moved to the user space, hence you can get rid of them.
    Many ROMs here

    and instructions

Very friendly forum as well.[OT section ends]

Since pykko's test indicated that Kaspersky mobile security rated the highest on Android detections, I guess I didn't do too bad. I know about it being "embedded" into the ROM and can't be removed. I had updated to 3.2 as soon as I got the Thrive before I knew anything about "rooting" (this is my first Android device). It's ok as it is but down the road in 2014 I would like to install the Ubuntu Tablet version on it when it comes out.

I downloaded NetQin on my Nook Color from the Amazon Market and it had some indecipherable scheme for payment.

Some weird messages popped up when I updated the virus database.

I ended up uninstalling. I noticed some similar messages on the Android Market reviews, that while unclear, intimated that people were being charged without their knowledge.

Anybody know how NetQin on Android works with regards to payment method, trial period, freemiums, free and full programs, what have you?

Just like to know here if anyone is using Avast for Android, I have downloaded it a few days ago as the new release non beta version is now out.

So far it seems very good, fast and not too bad on the battery, plus a host of features as well including a firewall (mind you your phone needs to be rooted for that )

I'm using it since first beta and its working great. There were few glitches but they were pretty much all resolved.

Same here; been running it since its initial release. Very light and appears to have little effect on battery life here (samsung galaxy II).

If this remains free with all of its present features why would anyone consider/ buy any of its rivals?

Detection wise it's also next to Kaspersky, which is one of the better ones. And interface is one of the best i've seen right next to DrWeb.

Now re Avast AV for Android. I am slightly confused here re the Anti Theft application. I have set this up and also during the setup put in the number of my 2nd mobile phone, so incase anything happens it will sms my 2nd mobile phone.

    Question

    1. Assume if my Samsung Galaxy II gets stolen how will it sms my other phone
does this only happen if the thief decides to remove the current SIM and
put in his or hers, I mean there has to be a way to know and send an sms
    to my 2nd phone.

    2. So assume the phone gets stolen and I want to remotely wipe it, do I
simply call it with my 2nd phne

I don't understand how can you even send SMS to a phone that doesn't have your SIM in it? The trend with ppl who steal phones is to turn it off immediately or remove SIM immediately. Wouldn't this make all anti-thief features useless?

avast Anti-Theft will block the device as the new card is not a trusted one.
You need a root device to do that.

Well yes, but if the device is turned off you can't do anything with it remotely. Which is what they always do first.

Well... Here, they keep it on for a while, do a lot of "illegal" calls... So there is a possibility.
But, anyway, you need a rooted phone and avast Anti-Theft installed to have peace of mind in the case of your phone got stolen.

What do people do with stolen phones? I would imagine a "pro" is going to immediately turn it off until it can be wiped and then resold(?) I've read that Avast AT (Theft Aware) can survive a wipe and keep working on a rooted phone. Still the phone obviously has to be ON to locate it. If you can locate it you then have to convince the police to help you recover it (unless you think you're going to do this yourself which is potentially dangerous and maybe tricky legally as well). If you want to learn how this is done professionally go to the Lojack site and read up on how they recover stolen laptops:

    http://www.absolute.com/en/lojackforlaptops/home.aspx

I'm hoping that eventually they will support phones as well as they've become just as important (and expensive) as laptops.

Practically speaking AT software is very helpful locating lost devices, but stolen devices are another matter. Perhaps the most important thing to do when a phone is stolen is notify the carrier and have them block it so someone can't run up your bill?
