Most disk-imaging programs offer a Track 0 or MBR restore as an option, as most often it isn't really necessary. Typical reasons for restoring the MBR include infections and to similarly configure a replacement drive.

I've used the option when replacing the hard drive and dropping the image back on.

I typically only do it on a new disk...it will restore the MBR and all related disk information.

New version posted (I think today but not 100% sure)...v1.40.0.15956. As Aaron would say, no release notes! Where are you Aarono_O Might be a release only to issue a new trial period. Thanks!

    Hi napoleon,

Thank you for the update alert, but why would they release a new version just to issue a new trial period (that doesn't make any sense to me)? :doubt:

I am guessing because usually a day or two before the trial period expires on their software, a new version magically appears with a new trial period window and no release notes. Without release notes, I can only guess...unless he is truly fixing issues once a month around the trial expiration date (intended or not).

Drive snapshot support and releases are strange.
The software is expensive but in general very reliable.
There are regular releases without change log and very terse (if any) communication with users. Also on the day of release, or just the next day, a pirated version of the software appears on software pirating sites. I would not touch that version as I would guess it could be "talking home".

I wasn't aware of the pirated sites doing something with it. I've had great luck with it, as well as emailing Tom, the developer.

I noticed that just after a week another build was released yesterday! In my mind that shoots-down the 'trial theory' and suggests that a bug may have been identified in the earlier December build.

Thanks for the heads up. He's done that a few times this year...sounds like he did find something.

A quick search for "Drive SnapShot 1.40.15957" on google will list the many sites that had that latest version with serials, keygens, or cracks on the day it was published or the next day (and very probably malware-rich).
I agree that DS is very trust-worthy. It saved my skin a few times in the years I have used it.

    DS 1.40.15981 is available. http://drivesnapshot.de/en/down.htm
A new release without changelog as usual. Tom is regular as clockwork.
Do a search for just Drive SnapShot 1.40.15981 on Google and marvel at the efficiency of that method of distribution. I wonder how Tom can make a living with that software.

    Hey all,

A new version of DS is out...v1.40.0.16004. As the norm, no indication of any RN's or anything. Enjoy!

Thanks for the heads-up nap. For a while I must admit I thought that the only reason for a new build was simply to add a more current date, but as of the last build I noticed that my differential images complete much faster! :thumb:

Scott, that's definitely the case - the reduction in the time it takes for a differential image is so obvious (I only wish I had actually timing comparisons to share, but I don't).

    Hi all,

Seeing that Drive Snapshot has a good following on Wilders I imagine it's a reliable image backup program but is it easy-to-use?

Can any of you compare it to Image For Windows (which is also very popular here)?

    Hi SD,

I find DS very easy to use and imho much more straight-forward than IFW (but admittedly that's very subjective).
Comparing the two programs, I would start out by saying that they are both extremely reliable.

DS is a truly portable program whereas IFW is not (although I've been shown how to make it work in a 'portable fashion').

As one who relies on cold-raw backups it's important to me that DS can create cold-raw differential images. The last time I tried doing that with IFW it could not.

IFW includes very good and easy to use cold imaging/restoring boot-disks (IFD & IFL). DS also includes a DOS cold imaging/restoring boot-disk but unless you are familiar with DOS commands it can be difficult to use. However, as a benefit of DS' portability you can just bootup with any WinPE, navigate to wherever you keep the DS executable (I keep it my external hard drive) and simply run it.

A DS license costs about 56 USD for 1 PC (they discount licenses for multiple PCs). A DS license is good forever.
An IFW license costs about 33 USD for up to 3 PCs. An IFW license is good for the current major version.

Hth, if you need any more info just holler.

Hey Scott, thanks very much for that feedback (DS vs. IFW), it was very informative.
