I've gotten the error message "User rules file contains invalid data" in my system tray balloon area twice.

I'm using XP Home SP3 32. I just installed version 5.0.93.0 of NOD32 AV after uninstalling version 4.2x. I did typical installation, but have changed a few settings after install, including switching HIPS to "Learning Mode" for 14 days.

We have only seen a few instances of this but are aware of the issue.

We are asking users to create a Support ticket so we can collect log files for the developers to investigate. If you haven't already, please open a support case: http://www.eset.com/us/support/contact.

Nope, it did not resolve the issue for me (also running XP Pro SP3). In fact, I never experienced the issue *until after* I upgraded to 5.0.94.0. o_O

Upgraded manually today. Upgrade never showed on "Update" in UI when I clicked on "Available version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus: Check."

Will report back if problem continues. Hard to figure out what triggers it. Just seemed to pop up occasionally.

I got his message several times myself. The bigger problem was that I repeatedly (and for no apparent reason) got messages saying the AV required attention. I had installed v5 over v4, so finally uninstalled and did a clean install. Have had none of these balloon messages since.

I see that message in version 5.0.93.0 running on XP Home SP3. It seems to coincide with my attempting to open files on CD's I've burned myself. It doesn't happen every time and the CD's still play properly. (In case it's relevant, I used an old version of Nero to burn the discs and VLC to play them).

I also get 'A computer scan has started' messages quite frequently, but they don't seem to be connected with any particular event.

Those having this issue on Win 32-bit, please paste here the information about installed modules (right click the tray icon -> About).

I have once again encountered the problem (following clean install.) The "invalid data" message began appearing each time I plugged in a thumb drive. Mounting a USB hard drive did not have the same effect. I experimented with loading and unloading the thumb drive in each USB port on the front panel and got a complete lockup on the fourth and final port. After rebooting, the problem didn't manifest at all. I do have USB Safely Remove running.

    I hope I made it clear that these messages are not causing me any serious problems so, unless they could in be an indication that protection is in some way compromised, I'm not really bothered. Requested information as follows;

Upgraded to 5.0.94.0 for a day, found it would crash my computer when my USB drive connected. Rolled back to 5.0.93.0 just now since I really need the drive (glad I saved the real installation file instead of the smart installer). Will report back with installed modules if I see it happen again.

Just to update my experience with this issue, I have not seen the "User rules file contains invalid data" message in ~4 days. I continue, however, to see the "NOD32 Antivirus requires your attention" message pop up from time to time.

In the unlikely event that it could be relevant, I got the 'User rules' message yesterday when I started to play a commercially recorded DVD (Xena Warrior Princess - I'm a student of Greek mythology you know!).

For what it's worth, I haven't seen the message recently when playing CD's I burned myself.

I installed 5.0.95.0 today to try and fix the "can't mount external hard drives" problem.

I am now getting these "user rules file contains invalid data" errors.

Is there something you would like me to do to help diagnose the issue?

I'm getting the same "user rules file contains invalid data" errors.

Would be nice to know if this problem is being looked into. Very annoying!

    Same here, Dec, 18th 2012 / Nod32 AV v5.0.95.0

User rules file contains invalid data
This popped up twice when I tried to mount a drive. Are those of you getting this error also running Truecrypt on the system?

There can be several reasons for that error. I can provide you with an updated dll that should prevent it from occuring under certain conditions when it shouldn't appear to see if it appears in error or if there's actually a problem with your rules set.

Ok..Tell me how to get the DLL. I'm still getting the messages, at one point, 14 times in a 4 hour period!

    I'm running Win XP 32bit, NOD32 32bit.

I'd like the updated dll also. I only get these messages when I run my imaging application, ShadowProtect (I believe "esc108" mentioned getting them while running a system backup as well). Regardless, this is, indeed, getting annoying.
