dvd screenshots

I recently got a gig drawing tattoos. Someone wants a Predator tattoo, so I rented the dvd thinking I could just take some screenshots and do my drawing from them.

I take a screenshot (alt print screen or turbosnap) and paste it into paint or photoshop. If I shut the dvd player off, my document goes to an empty black canvas.

Is this some copy pretection sceme? Is there a way around it? I was hoping to avoid copying the movie. I didn't think it was a very good movie and don't really want it any way; plus it would take a while on my slow computer.

I'm using win98 and the ati dvd viewer that came with my video card.

 

What you have to do is use up the overlay with another application, or use a screenshot application that supports video overlays (I think hypersnap is one program that supports this).

What I usually do is use up the overlay by playing another mpg in windows media player first.

Here are some steps

1. Play an mpg or other video file in windows media player, and then pause it after a few seconds of playing. Then minimize windows media player.

2. Now start your dvd player (ATI dvd viewer? or PowerDVD or WinDVD or whatever) and play your dvd movie.

3. Pause the dvd player at the desired location and then take your screenshot by using the prnt scrn key.

4. Finally paste it into paint or photoshop.

 

I can't do it. THe ati player won't play because the video overlay is already being used.
I got hypersnap, and I have the same problem as before, but I may be doing it wrong.
