I don't need anymore anti malware applications, I'm fine with what I have, and I don't collect licenses, but I must say that such a price is really hard to beat. Which brings me to think that most AVs companies are really charging too much (average yearly subscription is between 30-50 US $).

At a time when the Euro may disappear (hopefully not!), and facing possibly the worst year in 2012 on record since 1929, a price of around $10 from most companies would probably be more realistic. I also think that reducing the price would possibly increase the number of paying users offsetting the apparent loss from the discount (although in reality it may not work this way).

I agree AV programs are way too expensive for the most part. You can buy a license for Windows online for about $100, which will last the life of your PC (or longer if it is not OEM). Most AV licenses are about $40-$60 per year. There is no reason AV should cost more than the OS.

I guess one thing to keep in mind is that if as person wants an av there are viable ones always free. Then again if they want a paid av there are many that regularly come up as a free promo or heavily discounted. Emsi and some others have promo's regularly which I suppose is just part of their marketing strategy but works well.

    Indeed! Osaban,

I'm myself getting tired of this kind of loop or endless vicious circle of yearly renewals and more, yearly renewals. I'm seriously thinking about jumping on the freeware bandwagon. Many people [including myself] are barely making the ends meet in these difficult times and having to shell out US$ 60 here for software XYZ, US$40 here for sotware ZYY, US$35 here for software YZX and so on every year is not helping much my cause when some other things are so much pressing [kids school, mortgage, car, food, gas, cards, etc.]

With some exceptions, mostly of my software is licensed with yearly renewals due, but several of them are up next month and I'm seriously thinking about replacing nearly all of them with freeware versions.

I know some Wilders members here strongly oppose to lifetime licenses because is “not good for business” but what some software vendors might choose to keep their business afloat is to split their licensing in: [1] Lifetime licenses which would cost a premium but, you would only need to pay once and [2] a yearly renewal at a much lower price to encourage people with less resources to go that route. I know the SBIE developer adopted that scheme recently, just to give an example.

    Thanks.

Now I cannot decide whether to purchase EAM or OA. I'm thinking that OA with MBAM PRO (and some common sense) would be enough actually...

I normally don't use a resident AV but the combo of EAM and OA premium runs very well. I have EAM set to scan on execution only (like OA++) since OA should pick up just about everything. EAM is a bit heavy on ram (up to 160 MB) but there is no noticeable slowdown on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop.

Definitely worth a try with such a good discount.

Most of the time I haven't run a r-t AV either, and this is the first time I've tried the EAM/OA combination. What does EAM set to run on execution only cover? A program beginning to run? Would that setting allow EAM to automatically scan a file after being downloaded? The other question I have about what Ed_H said is does OA really catch malware and viruses? I thought it's area of coverage was internet traffic and as a HIPS watching for unusual activity.

+1. Also get the free year of AdMuncher premium. Heck, AM by itself is worth the $8 price.

Yes, setting the file guard to scan "On Execution" means only scan when running a program.

OA is a classical HIPS so it will flag anything trying to run on your PC and ask you to allow or block it. The problem with classical HIPS programs is that if the user allows a program in error then you could easily get infected. I usually run email and browsers in Sandboxie so if I answer an OA alert incorrectly then I can just delete the sandbox to get rid of any malware. Having EAM on board is just another layer of protection.

I disagree when you claim OA is a classic HIPS. It's not. It's cloud based and only asks for files not in the cloud. Classic HIPS would ask you about any action by any application.
