Just as well it isn't a listed company that sees its stock price go nowhere for years.

A lot of people don't like Unity at all, so I would imagine that has had some impact.

The main reason that Mint has became so popular is that its developers actually listen to Mint's customers and they are trying their best to make improvements around their customers' requests and or wishes. Thus, Mint's developers are not arrogant like those of Gnome 3 or ego inflated like the Unity's.

Distrowatch shed some light on that matter with their Hits Per Day (HPD) tracking. It does not really matter if it is a year, six months, three months, or a week Linux Mint is the current leader. It is to no surprise, at least to me, if you listen to your customers popularity is bound to happen. :thumb:.

    Thanks. :D.

I agree, although Unity would be far more palatable if one could get "under the hood" at things rather than being locked out. In its current state it's almost like a Fischer PriceĀ® product.

This thread gives me the curiosity to test Mint in VirtualBox... Let's go :)
I'm with Ubuntu both installed and in Virtualbox.

Mint is just one guy, as far as I know.

Mint is run by Clem full-time, but he does have a team who help/contribute:

The Linux distro landscape has a strong " survival of the fittest" climate, which is not a bad thing. It weeds out the bad distro's, and makes competition stronger. I only didn't expect Ubuntu to decline so fast (bare in mind that Ubuntu is still the most used Linux distro, it's only losing popularity as more people move to Mint).

So what is the fuss with that "one team member"? What is it one is trying to prove? The bottom line to me is the end result; and that, at least, no one can dispute.

    Thanks.

    I completely forgot to mention.
The only thing that we know has declined is page hits to Ubuntus page relative to Linux Mint, no indication of how many people prefer or even use one distro over another.

    Cheers, Nick.

    Interesting in what way ?

I didn't meant anything offensive by that, trying to "say something" , you mentioned team developers, I just said that it isn't a team, but actually only one person behind it. In fact, it's amazing what Clem did, it's simply amazing.

    Kudos :thumb:

That's true, I always wondered how that "popularity" info from distrowatch has anything to do with the actual usage of any distro o_O
    Nobody can measure that.

"Problem" with linux is that even hardcore linux gurus change distros almost every week.

The Ubuntu forum users are going crazy to find out whether or not LinuxMint 12 is already released. A pretty good achievement for a one man team to create such a traction. Please keep up the good work Monsieur Lefebvre, my dearest and my beloved one man team. :D.

Nicely said. By the way, I was not offended.

    Thanks. ;).

But anyhow ... I wouldn't say that Ubuntu popularity is dropping , like the title of this thread says.
    It's still no.1 distribution.
Second place for fedora (RedHat) , third OpenSUSE ...
By running Mint you are basically running Ubuntu, with customized look&feel and update module.
Like any other ubuntu derivative distros , they are all ubuntu, but with added themes, icons, wallpapers, different fonts, software and whatnots.
For example yesterday I added Mint 12 MGSE extensions to the OpenSuse 12.1 , it looked exactly like Mint 12 :)
Was my OpenSuse Mint ? Of course not, it's still opensuse.
You can do the same thing in Ubuntu release, install gnome3 shell, put MGSE extensions and you'll have Mint.

Well, he tried to install 11.10 on one PC and couldn't. Posted about that on the Mint forum. No explanation of why he couldn't whereas at least a few others in the world have successfully done so. I find that an interesting attitude to have.

Maybe it's typical behaviour and not interesting to others. After all, it's the "bottom line" that matters.

That's one thing I really don't like about the Ubuntu forum. There seems to be a lot of "off-topic" stuff there at least some of which seems a deliberate attempt to give publicity to other distros. If I want help using a distro, I'd rather ask in that distro's forum.

Askubuntu.com is much better in that regard.

    Here's hard proof:

    Attached Files:

    That's from http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/55773

The first link is to distro watch again.
The second is a poll that shows Ubuntu is still most popular (but has dropped).
The rest all link to distrowatch
The last link is a google search...

The second link is a little interesting.
Shows results of a small poll of approx 1000 people and Ubuntu is still their favourite distro and has dropped a little in popularity (3%) at the time of the article, but Mint has gained a lot (6%), which is interesting as it shows people must be moving from other distros (as well as Ubuntu) to Mint.

    Cheers, Nick

I find the attitude on Mint forums generally very good and the support and help you get there is a good reason to consider using Mint.

    Cheers, Nick.
