The main difference now is that you'll actually have to type Teletubbies Piratebay fully, instead of just 'Teletubbies Pirate' where Google Autocomplete would have suggested 'bay'. Hardly an Ayatollah approach on torrents.

Yeah, sure it will. I can understand that they feel pressured to do something though.
Correct thread title would be; Google disables 'Google search Autocomplete' functionality for filesharing site searches.

 

Google's been taking lots of heat for linking to pirated material. Perhaps a peace offering to keep SOPA form passing?

Someone at Google is being wickedly funny. Search for "the pirate bay" and you get no autocomplete results, just "Press Enter to search.". Search for "pirate" and autocomplete provides -thepiratebay.org as its first result.

 

I didn't get the autocomplete, with either. Ah, well...

 

Australia isn't in the United States last I checked.

 

I am aware of that , but what starts in the USA , can have ramifications elsewhere, eventually.

This kind of development is disturbing in more than one way. First of all it borders on full censorship, which is unacceptable in my book. And then there is the fact that people stopped searching for some terms (like it's shown in the graph) just because they didn't have autocomplete, which shows me how much people rely on such a feature rather than making up their minds from the beginning on what to search. This kind of reliance allows search providers to influence people and what they see on the internet in subtle ways, and this might be worse than censorship...

 

I got a very simple solution to this.. Stop using Google. And Use alternative search engines that care about privacy like DuckDuckgo -https://duckduckgo.com/ or Ixquick -https://ixquick.com/ If a person really must get google search results but with added privacy check out Starting Page -https://www.startingpage.com/ I cant even remember the last time I used Google and I dont miss it a bit.
