Cloning software to larger drive

    Thanks for explanation - so, essentially, ChkDsk doesn't re-examine any sector marked as bad, and in the case of the cloned drive I will lose availability of .5 MB of space. Any other downside of ignoring the issue?

    No, as you probably don't have any bad sectors. It is just bad information.

    I run XP Pro
    I used to use Acronis Migrate Easy 6.0 (which was very stable) to clone my drive to a larger (or smaller) drive but now use Casper 7.0 because it clones/backs up fully from within Windows, to the second drive, without a reboot.
    The initial Casper clone takes a little while but subsequent backups using smartstart (another part of the same software) just updates your initial clone so doesn't take as long.

    Unless you have half a dozen external HDs, Casper clones fall short of image backups. With image backups you can have multiple generations of backups going back as far as you like. Most folks would only have one Casper clone and if you updated the clone yesterday and your computer became infected last week and the virus had not yet become manifest, you are in trouble. The backup clone is no good as it is infected too.
