    @KelvinW4

I'm sure if you use it with right expertee, you didn't need anything else

But IMHO sandboxie would be a great addition :D

I really don't see my setup changing as long as I'm running XP. And when they stop supporting it I'm keeping this PC around just for gaming/multi-media, disconnected from the net.

So since my new computer at that time will be strictly for browsing/general use, I'll probably use Linux. I'm thinking about going dual-boot to learn my way around it awhile so that when that time comes the transition is smooth.

I need to decide what flavor of Linux to use. My goal is to have the best combination of security & usability. As I said I'll have my old box around for multimedia, so I don't need 3 media players ala Linux Mint. I don't need any bells & whistles, and don't want them either. Surfing the web is pretty much the only thing I'll be doing with it. I'd appreciate recommendations.

I would consider something like DefenseWall (32-bit) or if you are on 64-bit Sandboxie. I also run WinPatrol PLUS, great utility, but I think it can by bypassed.

I wish I had money :( but someday I will, don't worry. I only can use the free version of sandboxie, but I dont like the 5 second wait and the slowdown of browsing generally.

it's simple mathematics you don't use two firewalls

Well, not two software firewalls. I think most people use one software + one hardware.

Say it isn't so! How are you going to test malware and run the latest and greatest?

    hahahaha! :D
i'm mostly allergic to security softwares, so that part i won miss much. ;)

Linux is supposed to be safer than Windows but security is not the main reason why i changed.

i tried Windows 8 and it felt too much like 'Vista Part III".
i need some change and i feel Windows 8 is not giving me enough changes.

I hear you. Like I told you before I've been trying out 7-8 distro's over the past 2 days. I haven't tried bodhi yet. I still trying to figure out how to install a distro on my disk space I allocated. I'm not really sure if I have it on the right setting either SDA1 or SDA2. Once I figure that out I'll probably dual boot either mint or bodhi.

Okay, now I've taken Winpatrol out of residence, and added Comodo Firewall and D+ with Avast's Network,Script,Web, and Behavior Shields

I wonder how many people will do this when XP dies. I know so many techies that refuse to leave XP for 7. I have a feeling with XP dieing and what's happened with Win 8 so far linux will have a big growth in the comming year or so. Same to Mac.

I doubt it. People are willing to pay to not deal with change and MS offers loads of student deals and promotional deals - I've never paid more than 20 dollars for any Windows either because I got it through a job or through a school.

The nice thing about Windows 8 is that it's lower hardware requirements. Anyone who can run Win7 can run 8. Anyone running Vista can run 8. People who were meeting the minimum requirements for 7 but still having performance issues will likely have better luck with 8.
