Im setting up a server 2003 box to host a web page and email. Looking for free or not too expensive protectiono_O? This is mainly just for grins. :)

I was in the same predicament awhile back. I ran a trial of an older version of Kaspersky. There are others but this is just off the top of my head.

EDIT: I think AVG has a free one. Not sure how good it is.

For paid software SEP 12.1 is excellent on Server 2003. For freeware CIS 5.8 (which I use on S2008 and love) works very well.

Many with 2003 are using ClamWin + ClamSentinel with fairly good success.

VIPRE and Outpost (paid) work well on 2k3. Depending on the environment and what you're actually doing with the box, I'd suggest disabling on-access scanning and telling whatever product you use to only scan on execution. If you'd rather leave on-access scanning enabled (scanning on read or write) be sure you consult application documentation to see what advice the mfgr has for excluding their processes/folders in AV applications. Microsoft has their own best practices published on Technet somewhere.

Immunet Plus (paid, probably free too) will also "work" on 2k3 (they claim full support for 2k3 & 2k8 ) but it's unbearably buggy on both and conflicts with tons of common software in server environments, not to mention slowing everything to a crawl even when properly configured.

Wow thanks guys. Most are a little to much for just playing with a server but CIS does look interesting. I didn't know it would work on server 2003.

just be mindful of things that prompt for action - HIPS or firewall prompts can cause headaches w/servers if the box is running without an active (or suspended) RDP or local login session active.
