I have been a happy Ubuntu user since last year.I am still learning Linux but I am satisfied with it and I rarely boot-up to windows, once a month to update it.I am reading discussions about the unity and gnome .
I know that I have to install the new version of Ubuntu when the long term support ends.I want to learn that can I replace Ubuntu with linux mint debian edition? Is it ready for the newbies like me? Or should I continue with the next release of Ubuntu. Some of you know me and has helped me a lot about Linux so can help me with choosing the right distro for me.

Go for the regular MINT and not the Debian edition which is cutting edge. I am sticking to Ubuntu, I love Unity and for my desktop, I will use Kubuntu LTS.

Mint would be alright if they would install just what is necessary to have a complete system. Take for instance Mint 12 beta. It has three video player installed...Totem, Gnome-mplayer, and VLC. Why do they do that?! Plus all the codecs that they could find under the sun. Mint Debian was even worse. I'm a minimalist. I take out what I don't need or want. Mint's everything but the kitchen sink approach just doesn't appeal to me.

Since I'm Ubuntu to the core I'll probably go with and stick to 12.04 when it comes out but it won't be with Unity. Gnome-shell, with all these great extensions, is turning out to be a pleasure to use here in Oneiric.

    Later....

Trespasser, I had not a half hour ago read the same thing you mention in the above article (and quite a discussion going on below it).

for fun you can install Linux mint or Ubuntu 11.10 or kubuntu or other distro of interest ......in vmware but i recommend you to stick to what is stable for you if ubuntu 10.04 not giving you any problem why to change it.

its supported till 2013 by that time lot of changes going to occur + ubuntu/mint mature more

as far linux mint debian i dont use it so cannot comment much but they try to reduce brakage by putting LMDE Update Pack

    http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1836

right now i am using linux mint 10 and scientific linux 6 as main systems where opensuse and few others in vmware

now days new OS are very tempting and eyecandy but none of them at par compare to what ubuntu 10.04/10.10 fedora 13/14 centos/scientific linux 6 when come to stability and low on heat sensors

debian is great when come to stabilty but heat sensors are pretty high when compare to centos/SL / ubuntu

so best OS is what keeps you lazy which dont need tweaking and repairing all the time.

LinuxMint was not meant for the geek world. Au contraire, it was designed to be very user friendly so that everybody, except the geeks, could enjoy a desktop that is well designed, beautiful and effective enough to get the job done.

Moreover, to provide all the codecs and the most popular video players and more... are a pain for geeks who missed the excruciating thrill to sudo this and terminal that, just to find and install...whatever. Nonetheless, for the technically challenged LinuxMint is a God sent; just imagine the following: "everything works out of the box, including dvd playback". Wow, what a weird concept..

In addition to that, the Mint search box is pure joy, type and thou should find. And if you do not have something already installed, then a direct link would be provided automatically, in the search pane, for you to click on to download and install.

Everything works seamlessly and out of the box and yet the geeks are bothered by that. Glory be to God for creating a human being like Clement Lefebvre, since he is opening the Linux doors to the sudo and terminal poors of this planet :D.

P.S.: The geeks should not inherit Linux. Leave us alone geeks, please go to Gentoo. :p.

    Thanks.

    You're welcome, vasa1.

I thought the author may have been a bit harsh on Mint. I have used Mint in the past but preferred Ubuntu. I don't like bashing other distros as everyone likes different things, "different strokes for different folks".

You don't need to be a geek to see the total nonsense in supplying 3 video players within one OS, plus a bucket full of codecs. What a waste of disc space. Honestly, during the periods when you're not trying to be funny or witty, you've never stopped to wonder why they, Mint, do that? It was the first thing I noticed when I tried Mint a long time ago. This Mint-logic appears to have taken on a life of its own for it seems the tendency to include "everything" is now being embraced by every other distro at DistroWatch pushing iso sizes to some surprisingly large levels. I, for one, don't like this.

How could you not "find"...they include practically everything. .

Hey, I'm an Ubuntu fanboy. I admit it freely. Obviously your retort shows you're a Mint fanboy.

    Later...

To answer your question, Mint Debian is NOT currently suitable Newbies.

    http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

LMDE is working to stabilise things by running their own monthly tested testing snapshots - these are not proven yet.

It will be interesting to see how stable LMDE is as Gnome3 has just dropped into Debian testing but LMDE is still based on Gnome2.

Looking long term its not proven how well LMDE will cope with the big freeze before next stable is released and transition to new version after testing is released as next stable).

So if you want a day to day low hassle machine and you are not confident with apt and dpkg on the command line, Debian testing or LMDE are not suitable.

    Cheers, Nick

Installing codecs is as easy on Ubuntu as is on Windows, in fact easier, don't have to search the net for Klite codec pack which is illegal, all one does is go to software center or play a video and Ubuntu downloads and installs the necessary codec. How difficult is that really?

    @ Cet

If I have to give you an advice I would say ditch Ubuntu and embrace LinuxMint. The reasons are too numerous to enumerate...

    Thanks.

Sorry, but this is poor/unclear advice, even if well intentioned.
Cet referred to Linux Mint Debian Edition and as I quoted they (the Mint Guys) do not recommend LMDE for newbies.
If you are referring to the main Linux Mint then all you are doing is taking this slightly off topic and potentially confusing things to Cet.

Point of advice is to provide information, all you have done is provide opinion if you are not prepared to even summarise.

    Cheers, Nick.

Nonetheless, If Cet wants more information Cet only has to ask me...

You may disagree with my advice or the the way I phrased it, but it is my advice, nonetheless.

P.S.: For more detailed info please read post #7.

    Thanks.

What else did you want me to do. Want a lecture? Well then Contact a Mint dev. That's it. The only thing I can relate is my enjoyment of Mint. By the way Lisa is sooo jolie; I'm in love.

    Thanks.

I was just pointing out need to be clear which editions we are talking about to avoid confusion as even I still don't know if a(and others) you referring to Mint Main edition or the Debian Edition or both... o_O

You made a statement of opinion, if I suggested to you that its better to jump off a cliff than use Linux would you not want to know why and just follow my advice ;) - just trying to get people to avoid the Fanboy-like comments that have been occurring with more frequency on this forum:D

    Cheers Nick.

A statement of opinion. Wow. You are sure to have a way with words...:D.

To clear out some confusion I'll say :ninja: Mint 11 or Lisa (my love). With respect to editions, well take your pick they are all pretty solid to me. Of course you may disagree. Would that be clear enough?

    Thanks.

    More reasons to choose LinuxMint:

    1) Beauty

    2) Convenience

    3) Ease of Use

    4) Efficiency

    5) Practicality

    6) etc...

No gibberish included since I'm trying to be as succinct as possible. Maybe someone else could attempt to expound on those points, I hope. :isay:.

    Thanks.

Oh wow,I did not want to start a discussion about which Linux version is better.I only wanted to know if LMDE was ready for the newbies like me.
So thanks for all the answers.I do not have any problems with the Ubuntu LTS 10.04 so I will try to stick with it.But when the time comes I will have to choose what to install.I love Ubuntu but I do not like the unity bar at the left of the screen so if later the unity bar still does not have the option to go to the bottom I think I will choose Kubuntu LTS.
I love Linux Mint and had installed it before but I can not tell what it is but when I use Ubuntu I feel at home that is all.
About the codecs:Last year I was new to Ubuntu and had never used Linux before but I did not have any problems with the codecs just could not play the file and the dialog asked if I wanted to download the codecs and that was all.

I have another question:The network manager in Ubuntu is easy to set up VPN connections. Is the Kubuntu network manager easy to use.I have read some problems about the network manager in Kubuntu.
