    I'll be the first to admit, I'm very particular about surfing through specific countries GeoIP.

    Depending on where you live and what you do, these are all valid concerns for everyone. So what can you do to pick and choose when using Tor? Simple you can give Tor a static 'Exit Node' so that you always use the location you like.

    I personally use the Tor browser bundle and unless you really know what you're doing, then I suggest you also use it.

    With the 'Vidalia Control Panel', we want to go to, 'Settings' - 'Advanced', then click, 'Edit current torrc'. With the torrc file open you'll need to know the 'Internet Country Code' for the country you wish to use as show below, just copy and paste this into the file.

    Here's an example to copy and paste for Canada;

    ExitNodes {ca}

    This is all you need to copy into your torrc file, you can just copy this at the top of the file, later when you reopen to look at it, the information will be in alphabetical order and the original torrc file will be backed up.

    WhatIsMyIPAddress.com is a good place to have bookmarked so you can test this and keep your eyes on this;

    By the way I am using the latest browser bundle version 2.2.34-1 and this does work on it.

    HAVE FUN! :)

    Using the example that you just gave, you're limiting yourself to using 20 exit nodes out of 855 that are availble at this moment, and all of them are under one jurisdiction. If a governemnt agency or similar wanted to track you, you'd be making it much easier. They'd only need to monitor 21 points (the 20 exits and your IP) to be assured of capturing your unencrypted traffic and proving it's yours, no matter where your traffic gets routed in between. Depending on your real location, the exit country you choose, and your specific usage, this can be dangerous or worse. Don't limit your exits or options unless you have a really good reason for doing do.

    You're assuming this is a bad thing based on what actual facts? Simply because we limit the amount of exit nodes? This is hardly the case, why because with 20 exit nodes, remember you are not the only one around the entire world using those exit nodes.

    Also you better be doing something really bad, for law enforcement to take notice of you and make it worth their while to waste their resources to track you down through these nodes.

    Look at how limited the resources are when you go on a VPN as an example and are we hearing problems when using a VPN? No of course not.

    Anyhow we can talk in general assumptions but it doesn't mean anything, the facts are, as I stated, you're not the only one in the entire world using those 20 or so exit nodes as you claim and that is a huge amount to weed through, just to track down an individual.

    Also as I stated there are very good reasons why someone might want to do this, even though I didn't give those reasons, I'll leave that up to the end-users imagination to figure this out, just put together anything you can imagine as it relates to law and governments and you can imagine the reasons...

    That's pretty slick and works great. Tails rejects the torrc edit though.

    Thanks for sharing :)

    Ahh well if you're into Tails I'd contact them about it and let them know about allowing this change for those that want to do this...

    Hi Izzle,

    You have to edit the torrc file with root permissions, so, either issue the command:
    $ sudo -i
    to become root (in TAILS), or bring up a root Terminal window.

    Thanks, will play around with the edit. That would fit my bill perfectly.

    I get into the torrc file from terminal and it says editing the file as supersuser - but the ExitNodes command on the LIve CD will not take. Bummer.
