My sister's only protection on her PC is LnS & SnapShot disk imaging. And even SnapShot's only up-dated when I get some rare free-time on her PC. She cannot stand any security distractions. Look n Stop's pop-ups are the only ones that have gained a permanent seat on her PC.

So what's something 'whisper-quiet' I can add to her set-up of Look n Stop FW & rarely invoked SnapShot imaging?

I have been using Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 for a couple of months and have not see any pop-up yet.

I suggest you use Sandboxie and have her always browse sandboxed. The only time she'll "hear from it" is if she wishes to save a downloaded file outside of the protected areas (Desktop or My Documents).

I would just pair Sandboxie with LnS, and make the rules rather lax to allow things like updating (program & addons),direct access to bookmarks, and auto-recovery so she isn't losing stuff. And make sure everything she needs can run inside of it (media player, PDF reader, ect...).

When you stop by to image once in awhile run Hitman Pro, MBAM quick to make sure she's good to go.

    Effective, light, quiet security.

You could go for ESET Smart Security/NOD32 Antivirus 5 and Sandboxie. ESET is silent for as long as you don't set the HIPS to Interactive mode. ;)

Get her an AV or you want passive security?
All AV's are guaranteed to be very silent :D

    Panda Cloud, MSE and avast!

In avast!'s case if you turn off sounds and unnecessary notification popups. I don't even know i have it there unless it detects something or there is an update error which i also haven't seen yet. A lot of security programs can be tweaked to be silent, though you are very limited with some (especially free ones).

MSE (low false positives), EMET (configure only known-good applications), and Sandboxie with some holes for compatibility.

Panda Cloud free and Sandboxie free is really all you need. nice and silent.

Not sure what OS she's using but,

I've used Geswall for almost 2 years now, with HitmanPro and Malwarebytes FREE and I never had any issues, period. Running NO antivirus.

IN CASE THINGS DO GO BAD,I've got CTM. But I dont for-see that happening anytime soon.

    Good luck!

LogMeIn for doing work on her system depending on the trust level between you.

Thanks 4 the suggestions. forgot to inc. os=xp (3).

I'm thinking about SBiE with lots of 'allows'.

GesWall for 2yrs? How do you resist not trying other software? If you can distill it, I'll take 2 bottles.

A highly configured Sandboxie would be an excellent addition to your sister's current set-up. You could also add an on-demand scanner such as Hitman Pro or MBAM, just for reassurance.

I'd throw on Panda URL Filter. Light and unobtrusive, yet effective.

Protect every boot with Returnil System Safe. Ask her to save files in other drives. Does she installs softwares?

Or, better be happy with configured Avast, Avira, AVG, Panda etc.
