Not sure what operating system your PCs are on but if Win7 then in the search bar just above the start button, type in the name of one of your other PCs in the network preceded by \\ For example if the PC was called peter then you would type in \\peter and then hit the enter key. So long as you have typed in the correct computer name then an explorer window should open and an attempt made to find the computer and if it does then it will show up as probably the only computer in the network but you can still access it.
I have similar problems in that I cannot get the firewall to work but I can access one PC by the above method. If you are using XP then it has a search facility where you can search for computers and you would type in the same as above to find the PC.

Win 7 Pro on one and Win 7 HP on the other. Both 64bit. Your idea doesn't fix the problem unfortunately.

Edit: It appears that this may be a work around. I found if I use the run command and type in \\Name that Windows will ask for login credentials. I can then map the folders that are shared. I did run into a snag accessing the laptop this way and realized that even though my login name is set to WNS that the computer came with the default Owner and there is no good way to systematically change that. So I switched the credentials to Owner and the pwd and that fixed that.

Still makes no sense why ESS is causing issues for me on the network though. See my previous comments.

Tried but I think it made my problem worse. Now I cannot access some of the things on the laptop from the desktop that I could before. I was trying some other CMD commands yesterday to clear up the issue but no luck. I also tried: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/533210-solved-user-has-not-been.html when I seemed to have lost complete access either direction. Doing this gets me to see both PCs again but not the access I had.

At this point my desktop and laptop can see each other. That is particular folders. Now I can see the main folders but either cannot drill down at all or when I do I don't see the folder I had access to previous. Ex: to see Users on my desktop from laptop. But then I can no longer see the user I'm looking for. Only default and public. Same issue on laptop to desktop.

Don't get this at all. I'm not making any changes. I had resorted to using IP address and creating a network drive and that worked for a while. Before that naming convention worked. Ugh... what a pain.

You could try adding the Trusted zone subnet to the list of addresses excluded from active protection in the zone setup. If that doesn't help either, we'll need to get 2 Wireshark logs - one with fw enabled and the other with fw disabled when the issue doesn't occur.

Marcos: one your first step -> "You could try adding the Trusted zone subnet to the list of addresses excluded from active protection in the zone setup."

I haven't drilled down into ESS too much. So could you walk me through this step so it's clear and I do it correctly. I may have already done this. Sorry I don't remember off hand as I have other things going on and I just don't remember. I want to get through this suggestion first and if it doesn't work I would need a little assistance with Wireshark and producing logs. I do have Wireshark installed.

As for Wireshark, you can find some basic tutorials on Youtube by entering "Wireshark tutorial" into the search box. All you we'd like you to do is just create 2 logs as mentioned above, you don't need to analyze it in any way.

Still need my question answered. It wasn't about Wireshark.

Marcos: one your first step -> "You could try adding the Trusted zone subnet to the list of addresses excluded from active protection in the zone setup." What are the steps to do this? I think I have this setup correctly on the two computers. I need to be sure I've done it correctly. If I have done it correctly then this did not help at all.

The list of addresses excludes from active protection can be found in the Zone setup as shown below:

Marcos: thank you. Unfortunately this did not help. I should point out that I was, of course, following these instructions on both computers.

Will look into Wireshark. Do I need to create these logs running Wireshark on both computers effected?

By the way if anyone can provide the steps in Wireshark that need to be done I would really appreciate it. I can watch many videos but since I'm not familiar with it and do not know what "fw enabled" or "fw disabled" is or where it is located I might be hunting for quite a while to get these logs created and submitted.
