Hi. I also had the same issie with NOD32 5.0.93.0.

I was thinking it was other program but after some troubleshooting I noticed it was NOD32.

I sent a support email to ESET and they answered they are aware of this situation and that they are working on it, they suggested to go back to NOD32 4.2 So i go back to NOD32 4.2 and now my computer is fine.

I hope this issue get solved soon

But what is worrying me is that by doing so many hard reboots it seems that one of my 2 EHDD has damaged and almost all times it's detected as USB 1.1 instead of 2.0, does anyone has similar issues?
This EHDD has a power button, but when my computer freezed even that power button is not working so the only thing that I'm able to do is to pull the powercord from my EHDD, becuse even after a hard reboot of my computer, the EHDD stays frozen =(

Also using XP SP3. Ever since I upgraded from ESET version 4 to version 5 I have had the same problem when plugging in/turning on external hard drives (two different ones) - my system freezes. But I also get a warning message that ESET has detected Win32/Agent.SDG.GEN trojan and ESET cannot clean it. I have plugged both external hard drives into another computer running McAfee and scanned them with McAfee, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Microsoft Security Essential, and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware - and none of them find anything on the drives. Next step is to try ESET on-line scanner with the hard drives on the other computer.

I'm beginning to wonder of there really is a trojan on those drives.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you.

I have a similar problem: the PC hangs when I mount a Truecrypt drive. I'm running XP SP3.

I uninstalled v5 and reinstalled v4, but the USB problem persisted. Uninstalled all USB devices, rebooted, and let the drivers install afresh, but got a lockup as soon as I mounted a USB device.

Followup: uninstalled v4 (running nekked) and USB works fine. Guess I'll have to install another antivirus product until ESET gets to the bottom of this.

Followup#2: Uninstalled v4 and took a look at the registry. Removed residual ESET keys (not much) and reinstalled. Now USB seems to be working normally.

That sounds like an important clue. If the PTB can figure out what those residual keys from v5 are doing, they can probably fix the problem.

Same problem - reverting to Version 4 fixed it. Hopefully when a fix to 5.0 happens it will be posted to this thread.

I have the same problem with my 3 computers. All are running WinXP Pro SP3. I installed v5 NOD32 Antivirus and everytime I plug an external hard drive (Seagate 2 x 2TB, 1 x 1TB & 2 x 500GB) it the computer freezes and has to be reset.
I have tried it with 5 different hard drives on all 3 computers. If the hard drive is plugged in prior to starting computer then it will work.
I have now uninstalled v5 and reinstalled v4 on 2 computers. The third computer now has a corrupt hard drive which will have to be formatted. o_O Luckily I have a backup of all the data on it :)
Unticking the box to disable scanning of removable devices didn't make a difference for me.:'(
I hope they find a solution soon.

    Working v5 ETA?

It's been ~6 weeks since v5 was released, and the external USB drive problem still hasn't been fixed.

PLEASE, do you have an ETA for a working version? o_O

    I have the same problem.
Microsoft Windows XP (Embedded 2009) 32bit.
    ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5.0.94.0.
System hangs when you connect external USB harddisk.
External 2GB USB memory stick works OK.

Same issue with me ( took me already hours to troubleshoot 3 PCs and 5 drives including deinstallling various SW components like drive mapping software / Acronis True image and such) until I got a tip by a collegue to revert back to 4.x version.
Apparently there is a workaround available, but not yet posted in this forum:
    - different drive manufacturers
    - three different flavors of XP 32-Bit ( Home, Prof, MCE )
    - boxes with external media in NOD32 configuration both unticked

PCs immediately stop responding when drive gets attached, funny enough running safemode ( F:cool: makes drives work..........

We are all waiting for a solution, I immediately stopped rollout of 5.x on customers XP machines.
Note: cannot prove anymore (or not yet), but I believe to have seen this issue also intermittendly on one of my machines when running on 4.x before.
But without NOD32 installed: definitely no problems

Add-On: Reverting to 4.2.71 definitely cured the problem on 3 PCs over night. However I am not quite sure, whether this problem did NOT occur over the past before 5.x was out. I definitely did not blame it on NOD32, so I had no reason to give deinstallation a try. By now I have 3 candidates to watch and I will give feed-back about any findings.

Just confirming that this has been an issue for two of my customers as well. In both cases it was WinXPSP3 and v5 was upgraded over v4. Reverting back to v4 fixed it.

For some other issues I had to reinstall windows xp SP3 on my laptop.
So I decided to give another try to NOD32 5 but again the issue is there :thumbd:

    I will go back to NOD32 4

Also one of my external HDD got damaged in the process, since the only thing to do when NOD32 hangs my computer is to press the power button

anyway, It's a pity that such a great antivirus with version 5 got broken.

I purchased a 2 pack licenses since NOD32 was version 3 and have being renewing it, my license expires on January 2012 and will not renew it

So with my mother's laptop will use AVAST and with my work laptop will use SEP 11 :'(

Sorry ESET but it's incredibly how longer it's taking for you to fix NOD32 5

I'm sorry to hear that even though we have a fix ready and will be included in the next build along with some further improvements and fixes. It was a complex problem which wasn't easy at all to pinpoint. In the mean time we've suggested those having the issue to roll back to v. 4.2 until the issue is solved.

Any idea when the next build will be out. I never bother to update to .94 since .93 was not giving me any issues, even with USB drives.
