Before I reinstalled Windows I probably had 14 of the Microsoft Visual C++ things, and .NET frameworks, etc. This time I am keeping track of what installs them. Today one was installed with Battlefield 3. Later I got a Windows update for it, and now I have a slightly updated version as far as the version number. Do you think it would okay to uninstall the older one? Even though they are small I want to have as few as possible. I really wish the newest one was backwards compatible.

in similar situation i leave them there. of course it is good to experiment, remove and see if anything breaks. Again, not sure it is worth the time

From what I know they're basically individual "libraries" of code that whatever program bundled it read from to properly function.

Since it's so specific to that level, each library version is different since each program that uses it requires different bits and pieces. That said, I'd probably keep them even if the number version appears to be very similar. I would only uninstall older ones if the program that bundled it was also removed. Maybe there's more to it, but I'd personally play it safe.
