I haven't been using either of these products - can you explain what a keyfile is and why you prefer it over (I guess) using a password?

 

FDE using DiskCryptor works whether the 100MB partition is encrypted, unencrypted or merged with the system partition.

 

Yes and No. It IS needed for Bitlocker FDE but not for independent system's like PGP, TC, or DC. I have used all three and they all work with or without the partition.

 

Well, I tried it with DiskCryptor (4 times), and it didn't work for me, I would love to know how it is done, please share the knowledge.

Is the partition present or no? I had to encrypt it when it was there. Another thing are you checking the "encrypt DCO/HPA" box? If so this has never worked for me and always BSOD'd me. So if you are I would disable it.

 

Do I understand that the way you did it is by encrypting the system partition?

I do not remember seeing that box anywhere, since I still have it installed in my computer I looked around again and still can't see any box that says "DCO/HPA". Any pointers on where to find this box?

 

Use the same algorithm and password for both partitions. If you changed the partition table(e.g. by merging the two partitions) after installing the bootloader, try changing the booting method to active partition.(Tools>Config Bootloader>Change Config>Booting Method>Active Partition)

 

There is no DiskCryptor documentation covering that, I also searched the Internet and could not find anywhere (blog,forum, etc) mentioning what you just said, I will assume you discovered it on your own then.

Maybe it can be of use, so after someone finds your "BS" post, they can scroll further down and read the instructions, but I am not endorsing it as I have not tested it myself and I don't feel like re-encrypting everything again, I will try it if I ever need to reinstall the system.

Those are the bootloader options yes, but it does not mention anywhere that you should use the same password and cipher to encrypt Windows 7 system partition as you said, if you know that, it can only be because you discovered it yourself as there is nowhere mentioning it.

Did you actually do it?

 

Sorry I was incorrect about the cipher(I've just tested it), but the password should be the same and it makes sense otherwise how is it supposed to decrypt the system partition without knowing the password? I haven't done that yet but always assumed it(different passwords) would fail.

 

That was an important piece of information, the "assumed" and "theoretically" should have been included somewhere, I think I am done on this thread.

Can you guys let me know what the easiest and quickest way is to make backups of the keys/ mBR or whatever else you should do.

I only have a netbook diskcrytor'd, but I really dn't care if an accident occured and I could never get back into the hard drive.
Different story iwth my main home computer. I wish disckcryptor was more 'noob' computer friendly and just had a menu option to backup all the things I should know to backup

That's what I mean.
For a non geek person like me that's impossible to do. I can't follow all that. wish there was just a 'create livedisk or live usb stick' option. That's prob the negative of this software. No support at all, and the software creator seems to have better things to do than update and fix the bugs with this software.

It's a shame, much rather this than truecrypt.
