Synaptic installed. Software Center works fine on my desktop but the poor AMD CPU gets overwhelmed on my netbook.

One tweak I didn't apply in 11.04 and won't apply in 11.10 until everybody agrees it's absolutely safe is to enable that compiz settings manager. It seems a lot of cute effects can result but ...

    some more tweaks themes

    http://blog.sudobits.com/2011/10/13/top-10-tips-and-tricks-for-ubuntu-11-10/

    http://blog.sudobits.com/2011/10/10/top-10-gnome-shell-themes/

one my simple trick many people already know

how to install a nice icon theme like this on ubuntu

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1958223&postcount=708

1st create a folder (newfolder) in Downloads

2nd now extract your favorite icon theme to that folder (ie right click path and extract just like winzip)

3rd open terminal and type cd Downloads/newfolder

    4th ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Downloads/newfolder$ sudo su

    not you get the root

    5th root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu/Downloads/newfolder# cp -R * /usr/share/icons/

*** cp -R * /usr/share/icons/ will copy and paste all folder inside content to icons folder***

    ie

that command copy all the inside contents of newfolder (which is extracted icon theme folder) and paste it to /usr/share/icons/ directory

    sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

and drag to icon theme name you get your favorite icon theme loaded

This has got to be mother of all tweak lists although strictly speaking it isn't tweaks :D
It's a handy list of things to consider installing though that you may have forgotten about but lurks in the back of your mind somewhere.

Thanks to linuxinstalledfromhdd who linked to it on Ubuntu Forums

I hope it works. The upgrade install is taking longer than I thought.

Upgrade or install? Mine (via the Software Update Manager) took a while (several hours) because I did it on the first day itself and because I have a slow net.

Also, there are points in the upgrade process where we must provide a response. Otherwise, things just wait and wait and wait until the response is provided.

I didn't make a note of the number of times I had to respond but it's not just in the first few minutes of the upgrade.

That should be made clear by the upgrade process but I didn't see any such warning. (One guy mentioned kicking off the upgrade and going off to work thinking he'd have 11.10 ready by evening. Didn't happen :D )

The Software Update Manager failed for me, due to some kind of lock by another package manager (there were none).

Therefore, I decided to use the CD, because I downloaded it for my VM anyhow.
