GFI is continuing to make large investments into VIPRE. The VIPRE 5 roll out to our install base is going faster than planed and according to Mark Patton who runs development for VIPRE, this is the best release VIPRE ever. As the CEO I want to be clear that I am here and listening and you can email me at wscott@gfi.com at any time.

I would hope so. Not sure why they would release a product they felt was worse than past versions.

BTW, will you come around Wilders from time to time? I really hope so.

    @ clocks
I took Walter Scott to mean that this is a major release with plenty of real improvements, as opposed to some program releases that always seem to be "name & date changes" only, or minor GUI enhancements. :)

Yes, Alex has left the company and I hope he gives me the opportunity to invest in his next venture. I don't claim to have any way near the security industry knowledge of Alex, but feel in very good hands with the strong team he built that sit around me.

Not to sound like a marketing message, because that is not my style; we invested huge resources into VIPRE 5 and not only succeed in putting out the best quality release in the history of the company but we listened to our customers and delivered a product with hundreds of fixes, improved performance, enhanced detection rates, cleaner user experience and made installing the product and maintaining it even easier than before.

I have a question and I am sorry if it is already been answered I have not been following the thread or have Vipre 5 installed.

In CounterSpy 4.x when I would first install the program it's def database would start at 0 and then attempt to download the latest one. Now that should work fine but since I have a slower internet once CounterSpy was 8x% done with downloading the database it would detect a new version was pushed and instead of finishing the one it already started it would download the whole thing over again. Any way that could be changed so when it updates it finishes the one it starts then just does a quicker update after that?

    Ibrad,

It sounds like you're seeing a software update prompt at the same time a definition update is occurring after you installed a version that wasn't the latest available version. Is that correct?

If so, the easiest solution would be to simply not click install now until the definition update process has finished. There are two separate update processes. When you select the option to install the software update, it has to shutdown VIPRE which will of course stop the definition update. Alternatively, you could always manually download the definitions from our website.

Please let me know if I misunderstood the issue that you were explaining.

Hey Nick, I think I may have not been clear enough with what happens when I have installed CounterSpy on some machines. I know they shared a lot of the core code with Vipre so I figure it most likely affects it to.

    1. I download the latest version of CounterSpy and install it on my machine and it installs with v0 of the database.

    2. CounterSpy detects that the database is not installed/not up to date so it starts the download. Now I have a slower internet so downloading a new database takes a little while (2 hours)

    3. Everything starts to load fine and I normally get close to download it all but Sunbelt/GFI pushes a new database version. When a new version of the threat database if I was 90% of the way through the database update it restarts itself back to 0% and does nothing with the database I was in the middle of downloading.

Now this may not bother those with a faster connection but those with a slower it constantly restarts it's download whenever a new version of the malware database is pushed to the update server. The only way it would ever download fully is when I could catch a break between the time when you release a threat db update.

It will work fine if I download the threat database manually and it would catch itself back up with a smaller update the next time. I just think it would be helpful if the program would not make it restart if a new update was pushed.

    Ibrad,

I've not heard of this issue before. I'll see if I can reproduce this and add a bug report.

Thanks Nick, I have been only able to have this happen with the initial update so I thought it was just by design. Thanks for taking a look at it.

I'm really disapointed, vipre is light and effective but no webshield in the antivirus version is strange...
I like norton too, very light too, it's a good antivirus and it includes a webshield in the antivirus version.
