I have Samsung GALAXY S II (SHW-M250L). I only let the V3 Mobile (pre-installed) run manually once a week and as for a real time check I let the Bitdefender Mobile Security run.

Are you still on the 3-month trial?

Yes, and good thing is that I have the BitDefender Total security license good for nearly 2 years: therefore, I may be able to continue to use it.

Is there any test file for android devices? I'd like to check if Norton Mobile Security Lite is real-time or on-demand only. But i think you need an APK package to invoke the antivirus real-time scanning.

Do you have any idea if Norton Mobile Security does have real-time scanning?

As for avast!, it's still scheduled for Q4 2011 so we should expect it sometime soon (just month and a half left). No fixed date yet though...

It scans downloaded files immediately and it picks up Eicar as well.

I see on their web page the free version claims to "Automatically scans downloaded apps and app updates for threats."

    https://us.norton.com/mobile-security/?om_ext_cid=us_hho_facebook_nmspd

The features of the upgraded/paid version are just anti-theft, web protection and call/text blocking. Saying that, I've not seen any detection tests where Norton faired well at all.

Actually i haven't seen any Norton related detection rates. But it being Norton i assume they aren't bad at all. Right now i'm actually running both, DrWeb light and Norton Mobile Security Lite. I like both of them as far as GUI goes. Maybe DrWeb a bit more since i'm using it for a very long time and i really like it overall plus detection rate was one of the best available.

I've noticed I keep going back to Zoner after trying everything else. But I recently got a 90 day trial for Kaspersky and am going give that a try.

Norton does have a real-time part, yes. It just notified me when 3G Watchdog updated on my phone. I just use both, Norton and DrWeb at once now. No noticeable drag at all even when installing apps for as long as you use fast microSD card...

And here we go with the overkill on Android. Is it really necessary?

Is it? They only scan stuff when installing apps so they don't really affect anything else. I have DrWeb because i know it's reliable and i'm just testing Norton. So why not?

    Hey guys,

Some inside info regarding Bitdefender Mobile Security, hoping to shed some light on things

    1) Out of beta and what will that mean for the current and future users
I'm afraid I can't talk about pricing and licensing model until BMS will be fully launched but I will say this: you will have a pleasant surprise when you'll do the update to the final version. I know it's not much to go on but we've gone to great lengths to make sure everybody will be happy. And I really think everyone will :)

    2) The infamous icon :)
Currently Bitdefender Mobile Security is probably the lightest application available on Android Market and with the smallest impact on battery life. Again, everything was designed (and trust me, it wasn't an easy thing to do) to save cpu cycles and not use the phone in any way if it wasn't necessary. With no compromise whatsoever when it comes to protection.
You will see whether or not the application protects your device absolutely every time it's needed. Whenever you install an application, mount your sd card or access a dangerous website. You will know there's something wrong (though it was never the case so far) if once you install an application or insert a sd card you don't see the message "Bitdefender is scanning your.. " in the notification area.

We'll keep monitoring this thread so feel free to keep commenting here

    Hello everyone,

Additional technical quirks related to Bitdefender Mobile Security and the "icon in the notification bar" issue.

The way we are detecting the various events (like application install or sdcard mount) does not require the application to be running all the time. We are registering into the Android events system so, if the app is not in memory, the system will run it and deliver the event.

That means that in conditions where there is no need for AV, the system can free the resources for something else. This ensures the smoothest possible experience in using the device, without sacrificing the security of the system.

Does anyone know if the Norton or Vipre mobile programs use their own dns? Or is there even a dns alternative for mobile browsing besides what is provided by the service provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc).

There are android apps that enable you to set alternate DNS servers.
