It is better at detecting viruses. I uses to use AVG. I must admit that AVG uses very few resources, a similar trait of NOD32. Give it a try!

I do really like NOD32 but the fact that it makes Skype run so slow is just crazy! Because it runs good on every other AntiVirus software I have tried.

It´s hard to say if Antivirus A uis better than Antivirus B.

There are some features that make NOD32 strong. There is the so called Advanced Heuristic, it´s like a little PC that runs in memory and executes files and analyzes the behaviour. For example: If a file is executed and starts to show mailing activity without displaying any user window, NOD32 would notice it and could rate such action as worm-like behaviour. (This is a very simple example, there is a bit more about it) So NOD32 is able to detect some (many) Worms without the need of a signature update. Another thing is the scanning speed. I think there is no other AV-Scanner that is as fast as NOD32. The next more or less outstanding thing is the record of VB100 Awards - no other AV-Scanner comes even close to this.

Sounds good so far? Ok, now the things that are not that great about NOD32:

The Advanced Heuristic is by default only available in the IMON Module. This means only incomming E-Mails will be scanned with it. As far as i know Eset will make it available in other modules too sooner or later. The next thing is the "poor" performance when it comes to trojans. Eset is very busy adding signatures for trojans, but NOD32 is first of all a very good Anti-Virus, not an Anti-Trojan. This means you probably need a second program to protect you from trojan-horses. Other AV´s are much more advanced in detecting trojans.

Now back to your question. I don´t know if it´s realy better than AVG. If you only compare the detection rate and the technical features - sure. But there is more about it. If AVG integrates better into your existing configuration then AVG is the better AV for you. It also depends on your habits - if you love P2P Networks, often visit websites with pictures of naked girls (aka porn-sites) and other nasty stuff - you need the strongest protection you can get. If you are a "normal" user that uses the PC only for work - NOD32 and AVG will do a good job for you.

I agree, but Advanced Heuristic is also available using /ah command with the nod32.exe executable.
ESET will add AH as a option to AMON and I think also to NOD32 scanner, so you will not be to write /ah command to enable AH.

Sure - maybe one day they will, but that can be next week, next month or next year, for now you need the shell extension or the commandline. So if you compare two products, you can only compare the current version - we don´t know what Grisoft will release with the next update too - so we can´t compare.

    Ladies and gents,

For the record: this is no a comparison/"which is better" forum - it's the NOd32 support forum. For that reason, this thread has been moved to a more apropriate forum on this board.

    regards.

Ah...but we KNOW for CERTAIN at least about AMON. Marcos posted the GUI for AMON in the upcoming beta and he told me I was getting everything I asked for in AMON. AMON has advanced heuristics in the beta and can unpack. As for NOD32 scanner getting adv. heuristics in the upcoming beta, that I don't know but it probably will.

That´s a screenshot of a BETA, we still don´t know how the final release looks and works - a BETA is made for testing before a final release comes out and can differ a lot from the final.

Advanced heuristics' trojans detection is planned to be improved soon. There are some other features we plan to implement in the near future such as adding a one-click option to submit samples of files detected by heuristics to Eset. Also, it is very unlikely that the features introduced in the beta screenshots will not be a part of the new beta as they are almost fully functional now.

I have no doubt that this features will be functional in the next beta release - the question is if and when this features will make their way into the 'stable' release. Since this thread was about a comparison of two products, it wont make much sense to compare a beta of product A with the final of product B. I guess like all other vendors you give your beta to the testers and wait for bug reports - and if a new feature simply causes too much trouble you wont release it until you get a 'OK' from the testers - and if you can´t fix it just in time, you wont release it too soon - right?

    1. AVG7 uses alitlte more resources that AVG6
    2. Update size depends, the def updates are the same size between 6 and 7, but AVG7 also allow "recommended" and "optional" updates (when avalible). The update include improvements to the scanning engine and new features. The file size depends on what is being changed.
