Hi Mekon, winsta.dll should be a legitimate windows file, right clicking it's properties will give you more info' about ie. being a genuine MS file, if in doubt zip a copy up and submit@diamondcs.com.au for analysis.

I have svchost.exe terminate allow disabled.

Just to clarify - When you say thet PG is disabled, do you mean procguard.exe the GUI or dcsuserprot.exe? You can see if dcsuserprot is running in Task Manager.

    Hi, mekon

    Just read your post #25

Have no Idea what you are talking about, but you and Pilli do.

So could you tell me what winsta.dll is and and what it is for.

No need to do that just delete the pguard.dat, and use your backup.

    Thanks for any help,
    Tak care,
    TheQuest

    Hi, Pilli

Thanks VERY much for your reply Pilli.

    Closer and closer me think.

I did a small test uninsalled mouse and keyboard.

Then run three jv16 tools and 1650 reg entries under Logitec.

I'll leave the reinstall a bit longer to see.

    A Big thanks once again.

    Take Care,
    TheQuest

PS: Interactive user, this service was turn off. [by me]

Hi Pilli, Quest, and everone else on this interesting little problem. Just an update on how things are going. I've removed terminate in the Allow options for svchost.exe and apart from it wanting to terminate a few processes, which it has'nt been allowed to do, and has'nt caused any problems anyway, everthing seems to be running ok. dcsuserprot is running ok, verified by task manager. No problems with PG since my initial posting. Admittadly, it is running on a fresh install of XP. The only things I put on this were the latest version of Opera's Browser. Version 1.6 of Mozilla's browser and email client, and Adobe reader version 6.0. That is apart from the security stuff. I refuse to use IE and OE any more because of the continuous security issues associated with em. I still hav'nt put any updates from MS on this install, working on the premise that. If it works don't fix it. And incidentally I've just read with regard to MSs release of Service Pack 2. "Could caus problems with some apps". So at the moment i'm leaving things how they are to see how it goes. The server with XP on it and PG is online quite a few hours each day, and i'm writing this on Redhat Fedora Core 1's Konqueror webbrowser. Sorry, just another little plug for Linux. Personally I would'nt be at all surprised if MS updates are responsible for this problem with PG. I say that because when I put the fresh install on this new drive, I DLd the Opera browser and tried it for my POP3 mail. This had'nt worked since the 28th Jan this year. Bingo I received my mail ok. Let the MS updater run allnight, and in the morning installed the updates. Tried the M2 email client on Opera again. No POP3 access (server error), just what I'd been getting since 28th Jan. Reinstalled XP. (this was getting beyond a joke) and Opera Gets the POP3 mail ok again. This is mainly why I hav'nt done the updates. Perhaps I'm just getting really paranoid. Mekon.

Millions of lines of code.(and it works most of the time) Amazing Really.

Hi Everybody. Sun. June 27. Just a little update as no-ones posted back. PG is behaving itself on the machine I'm using as a server (mainly so that I can use ICS for my Linux clients) . I have re-enabled allow TERMINATE for svchost.exe again, mainly to see if this is the caus of the disabling of PG problem, and as of yet PG is working with no problems. To restate the status of XP. There are absolutely no MS updates on this install, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are not used at all. The only third party apps are, Opera webbrowser/email client, Mozilla webrowser/email client, Adobe reader v6.0, and the security stuff. Spybot S&D, A squared(freebie) trojanscanner, Mc Afee AV, Version 8.0, Zone Alarm free v4.5, & PG. I an running this XP install as a bit of a benchmarking exercise as theres so little on the OS, that, if PG plays up it might be easier to find out where the problem lies. I intend to put the other drive back in the machine with all my music software and loads of other apps (hard drive caddies are quite usefull) to see if there is a recurrence of the mysterious disabling of PG. If anyone feels like replying, Pilli or Quest for instance. I know intermittant problems are very hard to deal with, especially working with XP (which seems to have a mind of it's own), but I'd be gratefull for any feedback. I'll keep posting to this thread and hope we'll be able to resolve this problem to a specific program. Personally I'd say it's an XP problem, but I would caus I use Linux a lot. But also if you do use Linux and want to get a bit of practice in at networking, XP works very easily as an ICS server. caveat. As long as your not on AOL! I'm in France at the mo and accessing the net from my Linux client thro my son's server with XP on it and AOL. It's taken about 10 trys to get the darned connrction.lol. Have fun folks. Mekon.

Hi Mekon, Thanks for your in depth trouble shooting. :)
I am not convinced that MS updates are causing the problems of the disappearing list.
I would say that both my PCs have had PG installed after a clean windows install due to other hardware software problems I was having.

The laptop has a simple configuration and is used mainly for photos and music with a 54G wireless connection to the wireless cable/dsl router.

This Pc has XP pro SP1 + all patches and is completely stable as are my laptop running XP home + SP2 beta and my other PC running Windows Server 2003 - fully patched.

Having said that I am preetty sure it may be to do with one or more of XP's system utilities such as chkdsk, Defrag Indexing service or EFS, hopefully Jason will be analysing the PG posts to find a link that can establish a fix or at least an avoidance.

    Cheers. Pilli
