While F-secure is a great product it suffers from uninstall issues. I went to try it about 6 months ago and could not install it on one of my older laptops running XP Pro SP3. At the time I had removed the current Av and clean out all left over files manually and i still could not install F-secure. After doing some research on-line I found out that if you don't like it uninstalling it can be a big issue with this product. Wish the info I found was old, but it was still too current for my taste.

A user in the security section of another forum I participate in told me that F-secure uses 2 AV engines for it's scans. It uses the Bit Defender and Avast engine. Anyway I can't confirm that it does uses those engines, but it's detection rate is first rate.

 

The truth is that for any AV you uninstall, it will trace.

A much better way to uninstall is to create a system image before installing the AV, then when you want to stop using it, just restore the image. Simple.

f-secure uses BitDefender engine + in-house engine.. BitDefender engine is one of the top AV engine so im not surprised F-secure is also one of the best

 

That would work well if you are only interested in trying an AV where restoring to an image will not entail too much work, such as re-applying patches and restoring docs. But you can also do this in a virtual PC.

But what if you are a user who's been using your current AV for years and then one day decide you want to switch to something better. Do you want this person to image their PC back that many years? Sorry I wouldn't do it. If that new product is so picky on my current system that it will not install or uninstall properly I would find a different product.

 

Where does someone find information like that? I'm sure there are other AV that use other scanning engines such as G-Data.

I went back to my old thread at the other forum and someone later on said what you said that that F-Secure uses Bit Defender and their own engine. It was G-Data that uses Bit Defender and Avast if that's correct. And G-Data is another AV with a really good detection rates.

Sounds good so far, I like it but I miss the advanced configurability from other AV's.

F-Secure doesn't use two scanning engines, it uses Bitdefender scanning engine + in-house developed behaviour blocker.

 

I hope this version to be light and not to mach problems.

I often see this recommendation. However, the average user does not have a clue how to do this. I don't either. Accordingly I do need the AV to uninstall from the Control Panel or at least with a removal tool from the AV.
Very much of a problem uninstalling one would cause me to avoid it.

Never tried F-Secure. Maybe I will have to give this one a go since I've been testing a lot lately.

 

AV-C often lists the scanning engines used by multi-engine AVs in their on-demand test reports.

 

The easiest way to ensure you uninstall an AV and all it's traces is to use an install monitoring application. I currently use Total Uninstall, but there are others out there which will do the same(some better). This monitors everything that is installed, then when you come to uninstall it, it will know exactly what was put on in the first place. I suspect some of these AV vendors ensure their products leaves 'traces' behind in the hope someone can't install a rival and then end up reinstalling the original AV. I know, controversial, but I wouln't put it past some of them!

Me neither, Trooper, but installed a couple of days ago and it's very impressive: I don't notice any browsing or system slowdowns at all - it's light as a feather. I agree that it's not very configurable compared to other suites, but I'm one of those people that find complex suites a chore. It's early days, but so far I haven't found anything that I dislike about it.

As a former user and beta tester, I truly believe F-Secure antivirus solutions today are among the best in the business but I have gotten tired of antivirus suites regardless brand that makes the computer choke with precautions and warnings. For my needs, I sometimes use the F-Secure Online Scanner which is free. Other than that, free simple real-time AV solutions are my preferred choice..
